Steering box adjustment!!

Have a 77 SSII with power steering, 345 2bbl, 727 auto. I am wondering how to adjust the "tightness" in the steering box. It has a little play in it (about 1/4 to 1/2 inch slop). When driving down the road, it wants to wander. Everything else is tight ( brackets, steering column, coupling).

I notice that there is an adjusting nut with a set nut at the top of the box.

Any suggestions?

Yes the nut with the screw in the middle is the way to remove lash in the box, but....... You must be sure the pitman are is truly not moving within the perceived slop. I suspect some slop May be tre's too

go a small amount cw each time. Relock the nut and test drive. If the slop doesn't improve stop.

Also be sure the box is perfectly centered. The box is tightest only dead centered.. If the box is adjusted while it is off
is off center it will bind causing a unsafe reluctance to center.
