starting problem

I need help ,my Scout only clicks when I try the ignition . I have checked & replaced wires under hood, starter batteries . . I can get it to start it by jumping from battery to s post on starter solenoid also by jumping from battery to s post on firewall solenoid .jumping across firewall solenoid . it also clicks in all gears ( auto ) I am guessing that the nss has been bypassed . could there be a problem in the ignition wire from ignition switch to firewall solenoid .I checked the bulkhead connection ,ok . I should also mention that I changed the keyed ignition on the tilt column

What year is your Scout? And what size motor? Also, from your description, it sounds like you have a Ford style solenoid mounted on the firewall - correct?

It almost sounds as if the wire terminations at the starter are not correct in conjunction with the addition of the firewall mounted solenoid. There is several write ups here in the forum regarding wiring up the addition of the solenoid. Here's one - remote starter solenoid

Hope this helps

btw - welcome

76scout II , auto trans , 345 v8- it is currently wired , ignition wire from bc to Ford solenoid on firewall on small post , hot from battery with ammeter & alternator wire , other large post to starter solenoid .

Also on the starter solenoid there is a jumper wire in place ,along with the lead from Ford solenoid . If I cannot work this out . I will hook up a 10 gauge wire from pos battery to push button on dash then back out to Ford solenoid small post ?

Is this correct for a push button start ?

You've got an awful lot going on with plenty of opportunities for failure points. The Ford remote relay, as you May or May not know, was not original equipment. So if whomever installed that did not do so correctly, that could be your problem right there. That's the first major electrical junction downstream from your battery, so its a logical place to begin trouble shooting. It would really be helpful to see pictures of both your remote relay and the starter solenoid. Saying this wire goes here and that wire goes there doesn't give us much to go on.
