starter issues?? or over worry

hey all,

replaced the starter on my 72 1210 345 last night and went to start her and she fired up faster than I've ever heard. I literally touch the key to the right and BAM. There is no major grinding or issues but its so quick and knowing my luck its so good its concerning. Then I see on here a bit about spacers. It did not have one previously and I've never used one on my CJ. Its a remanned from AutoZone. Would love to hear its fine but lets hear the reality :lol:

Secondly; When I finally got the thing off and was done was done cursing whoever made those bolts so difficult to get to I felt around inside the bell housing and found some metal shavings and gunk in the corners I could reach. Any thoughts or prevention?

Wether the starter spacer is utilized is dependent upon the transmission that is currently installed.
 
T-27 should be a Borg Warner automatic, so it does not use the spacer for the starter.

Only the Chrysler Torque-Flite 727 automatic uses the starter spacer.

All manual transmissions do not use the spacer.

Just went out to do a job and it wouldn't start! Got a replacement at Oriellys and its back to normal. I knew something was up when the first one had chips all over it and no tags! So I just lost a days work thanks to Autozone!

Let's tap the brakes a second and be sure about what transmission you have. A 1972 model with an auto trans should be (note my usage of italics there) a Torqueflite A-727 aka TF 727, or in IH nomenclature a T-407. If the trans case is one piece and made of cast aluminum...non-ferous so a magnetic won't stick, then it is indeed a 727 and as such would need the starter spacer shim. So now it is back on you to make proper identification of what you have.

I should have mentioned it's a manual, 4 speed 2wd. I was wrong about the tranny...my line set ticket says t-418. For some reason that seems strange to me but probably because I have too many #s In my head!
 
Ok. That would be a T-18 4spd manual. No starter spacer shim required. Yes, you're seeing how important it is for us to know some basic data about the rig in question so we can provide folks the most accurate answers and advice.
