Starter and Alternator?

Hi,
I have a 1973 scott II with a 345. Quick question! Can I get a new or used starter and alternator from my parts store or are they specific to IH? If so I will just order them from Jeff.

Thanks
jason

The motor itself is a common GM delco unit. The bullnose portion that goes inside the bellhousing is IH specific. You should still be able to get a new or reman unit for your Scout by asking for it by name from the parts house. If your Scout is equipped with an auto tranny, remember to install the new starter with the 1/8th inch spacer that is on your current starter. This is critical for proper gear alignment and longevity of the starter.

Thanks, for the heads up on the spacer. I do have a auto tranny. I have not taken the starter off yet but if there is no spacer you will not get proper alignment? Have you had this problem? The guy I bought the scott from said the starter was rebuilt. Just trying to think if thats what May be going wrong with my starter.

Thanks
jason

The altenator is a standard delco altenator of the era. Should be no problem getting one for your Scout at any parts store.

If you have a two belt pulley on your existing altenator, you will probably need to transfer that pulley to the "new" altenator.

Have you had the altenator tested?

Thanks for getting back to me! Yeah, going to get it tested tonight. Just wanted to know if it was bad, that I could buy the wright one at the parts store.

Thanks for the help

It's all about proper ring gear alignment. The spacer is not needed for a manual trans with flywheel. What's your starter doing or not doing?

Its intermittent. Its starts fine ones or twice then you turn the key and click. I cleaned the connections on the starter. Same thing. I will find out more tonight when I take it off.

Thanks again

I have never had a problem getting either.

Also, you May want to look into getting the unit serviced, sometimes the problem can be fixed. We have a local place that will rebuild your starter or alternator for about the same as a "new" one from a parts store. However, once they've rebuilt it, it has a lifetime warrany through them.

Hmmm, does the "click" only occur when the engine is hot?

It could be the starter solenoid going bad, but...

You also need to clean the terminals / cables on / at the battery.

Check the battery cables themselves...

Check the battery voltage with a multimeter...

This piece is probably missing on the majority of ihs, but IH put a heat shield on the pass side exhaust to shield / deflect heat from the starter.

Another extremely slim possibility:

many years ago, I had a battery "go out" in a "strange way" (to me). Car would start fine cold. If I ran errands and stopped for just a real short time (a couple minutes), when I came back the car would not start. I would stand around for 10 minutes and the car would start right up. After a couple times, I replaced the battery (the battery was "real old" -- 8 - 9 years on a 3 yr warranty battery. The longest any of my car batteries has lasted.)

Thanks everyone for all the feed back and input. Big big help! After pulling out and testing both the starter and alternator. The starter was bad and my bearing was shot on my alternator.

Thanks
