Started my "trail Rig" build.....Finally!!

This is the cronicle of the building of my trail rig. Please feel free to jump in with any comments or advice, this is the first sii that I have ever built. I'm kinda into the s80's, so this is a new experience for me.

Also keep in mind that I'm retired and have almost no budget for this build.

I have decided to to see if I can get a trail rig ready by I.h.w.r. In April and I started on it today....(12/22). I had a rotted 71 sii that I parted a couple of years ago (should have kept some parts!). I also just bought a rotted 76 with under 70k on it that has a 196/t-19/d-44's. Now having 2 rotted bodies and 2 drivetrains.....old and newer, I found a late model tub, 76, that Matt had, and is now in the backyard. I figure between all the sii parts in the yard, I should be able to make 1 good trail rig. I will use the 71's frame, since I have the matching vin and title for it, with the 78's tub, and the 76's drivetrain. That would net a legal 71 with a 196/t-19/and matching 44's with front discs, power steering, and possible ac.

This is what I started with....the "army" Scout as my wife calls it is the 76 and the cut up red one to the left is the 71.

Today I started the tear down on the 71(12/22). Seats have been removed, dash is out along with the wiring, column is out, along with the rest of the "dash" stuff. All I have left is 6 body bolts and to remove the e-brake assembly, and the old rotted tub is ready to come off the frame. That should happen the day after Christmas (that didnt happen). Since the 71 tub is junk, I've decided to just sawzall it into pieces to take to the recycler.

And whats left over.......345-4v/bw-11/d20/d30 & d44, power steering and brakes, 33 gallon gas tank. It has headers on it, but the driver side is cracked, so I will use the pass side for the 196 (couldnt hurt).

Started on the 76 "army" Scout teardown today. As far as I can tell the only body bolts that need to come out are the front and rear ones. The ones in the middle are already free, cause they rusted out of the body....lol

Got more apart today.......I swear, I have never seen rust in the places that are on this sii. And this truck does not want to come apart!

Im digging the recip saw chillin on the tire. Like "yeah behave Scout. Do what I say"

looks like you're doing alot of work there. Did you find any hidden treasures tucked in there between the inner fender beneath the vent?

Its been hittin mid 20's at night........so all the critters are either gone or dead. I did find a 70's fro-comb in above the powdery glove box though, other than that lots of rust!!!

Thats warm here man. Socal. Meet socol. Hits -5 tonight.

But seriously, gonna be a sweet rig when you're done

so you're using the 196 bulldog for your engine?

So you're using the 196 bulldog for your engine?

Thats what I'm thinkin.....some say its a waste of time, and others say it will be fine, I guess I'll find out. I have the 345 if the 196 isnt up to the task. This is my first sii, I'm into s80's so I'm used to a 4 banger, and the 196 is a workhorse and imo, less likely to break axles on the trail. I'm not much of a auto guy either, so I'll use the t-19........that with a terra low kit in the d-20, and I think the little beast should be able to go almost anywhere.

Theres only one side to that engine. Bw t-19. 3.73's. Thats my 77 pumpkin. Had 4.09's. Granny low.

Im not one to knock the 196 because my stock pimpkin, or the Scout formally known as the pumpkin. Like ron artest. Has outwheeled my friends built rigs. Spins tires fine. Hates mud. Loves snow and sand.

Im sure the 196 will perform fine. With 170ft/lbs of torque its not really a pushover.

You're gonna have a sweet rig man

Glad to hear that........I know my 64 with a 152, goes almost anywhere, and it likes mud. Dont know what the ratio's are in the 44's yet, still cutting the rotted to death body off!

The last pieces of the 76 came off today and its now just a frame and running gear. I still have to cut down the bed for the recycler, but its cold and windy today and I'll wait till better weather for that.

The new lineup

The next project on the list.......most of the dirt is off. A little more cleaning.....then rust converter, repair, and paint.

Parts are in, but weather and other.......commitments have put a damper on the build. Hopefully tomorrow will be the last day of weather and I can get back to it.

Thanks sledgehammer.....it gettin there.

Finally had the temp above 50* today, so I started on the tub. Took what I had left of some rust converter and painted the front lower part of the tub and started on the rubberized undercoating over the firewall and in the door jams. Then the wind picked up, so I had to stop for the day.

Pulled the exhaust off.....painted some more of the frame......and rolled it under the tub

tomorrow...............bolt down

The body is mounted, that was a sight to see, not really "a one man job" even with an engine hoist. Ended up call ruthie and michael out to help. Brakes are hooked up and working, took forever to get the steering column hooked up and bolted in, it was like it was to long.....fought with it for over an hour. Triple checked, everything was loose and lubed. Took it back out and apart twice......then it just went together, no argument, just like it should????

Started fitting the driver seat, need to fab some brackets tomorrow, need to get some steel. Got the winshield mounted but havent aligned it yet, ran out of light.
