Spring mounts

The factory original spring mount involves drawing the spring up to the underside of the axle, using u-bolts and a steel plate. The spring rests against a little steel table that is welded to the axle. Here is my question: are those little steel mounting tables hollow or solid? I realize it is an odd question, but believe it or not, I need to know. Pineneedle

In automotive lingo, those items are known as a "spring perch". There is a locating hole in the center of them. Leaf spring packs have a special, case-hardened steel bolt with a rounded head that goes through the center of the pack. The rounded head nests into the locating hole in the perch. This is what centers the solid axle to the springs on either side. There are also small caverns fore and aft of the locating hole on the perches. Their purpose, if any escapes my knowledge.

Thanks. Since we are talking about "materials" I have another related question: are the differential cases (the "punkins") cast iron or steel? Pineneedle
