SOA Steering

Ok so I thought I couldn't go wrong with having a Chevy 44 cut and turned and made to Scout width for Scout shafts. But he put the Scout outers back on. So what do I do for steering? At this point I have $600-700 in the axle with gears and labor and everything. Do I have to get flat top knuckles or with these work? I am on a budget and have been doing everything the right way. Just taking so long because everything is so expensive. I know for about a grand I can get all parts Mike stuff for the hi-steer and knuckles. Thanks for the input. Also if there is a thread with this could someone post the link.

You can piece together hi-steer stuff for less than $1000...

But you can also just run a "z" link with your current outers ansd steering arms. You'd only need the goofy "z" drag link.

If it where me I'd build a cheap high steer setup and re-use my current outers if they are in good shape.

$100 for a flat set of top knuckles.
$100 for machining.
$150 for an arm and hardware.
$150 for a tie rod.
$150 for a drag link.
$30 for a flat/short Jeep pitman arm.

Redrill the knuckles for the 8 bolt Scout spindels and be done...

Then for the next year or two save up to do a complete internal spline hub conversion using Chevy/Ford parts. That runs about $400 by itself if you use all new parts...

For a budget minded guy. What knuckles should I be looking for? Can the stock Scout ones be machined down for hi-steer arms?

No. Scout knuckles will not work. You need to find Chevy Dana 44 or full size Jeep truck or wagoneer Dana 44 flat top knuckles.

You can also use fullsize IH pickup/Travelall flat top knuckles but they are super rare and not worth wasting on a Scout build.

One of the better flat top knuckle id sites out there:
