smogg

Does any one know if 78 scouts need smogg and if so what does it need to have. Most of the 78s ive seen dont have catz or smogg pumps. So im reluctant to buy them. I live n California has any one ever bought a Scout and had to smogg it n California. Did it have to have catz or smogg pumps.

"smogging" has nothing to do with individual vehicles.

This determined by the individual states and also jurisdictions within various states as to what year model vehicles require an annual or bi-annual smog check.

We have no way of knowing where you live or what the regulations are for the state of your residence. Do the homework starting with the state agency that oversees air quality/smog program where you live!

Also this depends on the motor combo that you are running. Pick up a Scout with the sd-33 Nissan and then have no worries. The service manual has some decent diagrams to help get started on what you need and for what combination

I have been through a couple of smogs and im pretty sure that you are going to need the pump and the cat. Just call your local test only station and they can tell you what your going to need. I would just look for a 75 or older cause even just passing the visual inspection can be a real pain.

Is this a CA native Scout? That matters a lot. A federal emissions or 49 states Scout will require different hardware, but I could not tell you for sure what that would be. Call your local junior college (fullerton jc), if they have a automotive maint. Class they usually have a teacher who is an acting referee. You can see him/her and for a low fee ($10.00) he can tell you what is required. I use them for engine swaparoos. Like an 2004 ls into a Scout II

this might be a usefull link. referee centers fact sheet

I have a 78 terra with 345. I live in lake county which is only smog on transfer. I bought as is and had to get it smogged. My truck was originally a CA vehicle and was complete, so it passed. I have smog pump, egr, vapor recovery, dual exhaust and no cats.
