smog stuff

I wish I could post a picture but maybe someone knows.
I gotta 74 sct II. With a 304. On each side of engine - are these pipes that connect to the exhaust..with what appears to be flared connections...up to a larger pipe right in the way of the plugs wires....and then large rubber pipes that connect to egr? And eventually to carb.

We cut the rubber and capped it....runs fine...but I want to get this stuff off completely

are these important? (I am smog exempt) and if I take them out...how to I fill the threaded hole they came out of.

What the heck are they anyway???

What you are describing is the "a.I.r." system (air injection) which is a sub-system emissions device.

Do as search using keyword "air injection" and you will find some workarounds for dealing with this system. Here's one example:
