SlickRock, Deer Valley, Strawberry Run (July 15-17)

just checked in with hathaway pines rangers station.

No real change in trail status. Sr: water crossing questionable, plus large drifts blocking trail close to lake alpine. Dv: is open, however trees still blocking trail, along with large snow-banks.

This is the only pic so far from the past weekend. I'm sure more will show up soon.

This is on strawberry where we had trouble last year.
Snow melt is about 2 or 3 feet a week.

Stopped in on our way home a few hours ago.

They didn't have any reports in from wheelers at the ranger station.

Does anyone know the best way to get from hwy 99 to arnold? I was looking at the map and hwy 4 looks like the most direct route but there are lots of ways to get there. Also those of you with ham radios, will we be on the 146.805 machine?
Thanks! I can't wait!!!

Highway 4 is the fastest way.
If 99 has lots of traffic, you can cut over to jack tone road & hit 4.

Arnold is the last reasonable gas station, but it's still pricey.
Fill up in angels camp or in murphys (there are 2 stations right along 4 in murphys, the generic one on the left is the cheapest).
You can top of if need be in arnold.
Arnold has a generic/mini-mart in town on the right, then a chevron on the left just before giant burger.
(there is gas in camp connel, but will be $1-2 more than murphys or arnold.
There is also a grocery store on the left just before the brewery/golf course in arnold.

Edit: bring lots of bug repellant!

Thank you very much! I was wondering where to get gas, last. Lot of good info there for us foreigners!

Edit: so we're meeting at the giant burger, in arnold, at 10am Friday? I saw it in a post but now I can't find it!

Andy glad you got the time off. The 805 might have some issues that far south, there is the n6icw Repeater on mt vaca that comes in good. 147.195? Need to double check that. Then there is the k6mvr 147.000 repeater same location, not a 100% sure on its reach, but is a good repeater too.

If your up high enough they all can be reached. I don't know if I can reach the 805 in arnold or not.

Look at google maps, maybe cut over towards hwy 88 just after lodi and head to valley springs and hit 49 and down to 4?

The Scout maintenance check list is 95% done. Now I just need to pack stuff up and buy some food tonight.

Looking forward to the trip.

I had a great time on my first rock crawling trip! I am amazed at some of the places my (almost stock) Scout went! I have some new dents but I’m ok and I drove the Scout home!!

A big thank you to Craig, cheese (Craig), frank and mocha Mike for being patient with me!!! They were all very helpful! Someone was always helping me with the right line or stopping to make sure I wasn’t stuck! I would never have attempted these trails by myself!

But enough chit chat on to the pictures! This is Mike after pulling out a toyota pickup.
