SlickRock, Deer Valley, Strawberry Run (July 15-17)

To quickly re-cap:

we plan to meet up Friday morning… place tbd, but probably in the town of arnold or at the lower (utica reservoir) trail entrance to slickrock.

Trail progress will likely determine where we end up camping. If all goes well I would suspect we will finish slickrock and begin deer valley camping somewhere along that trail. Same will be true for day two and three and whether or not we end up doing all three is dependent on the snowpack, rigs, and group in general… nothing is set in stone.

As for headcount / trucks going I have:

confirmed:
myself (1) Scout (mostly broken)
Craig e. (1) Scout (on tons)
josh f. (1) land rover

tentative:
Scout it out (1) Scout
Scout addict (1) Scout (needs to fix steering)
rock tractor (1) Scout (truggy)
franked (1) Jeep
frankeds’ friend (1) toyota
mochamike (1) Scout 80 (on tons)

cannot commit (but will surely be missed by the group):
sean (silverscout)
kevin (1tontractor)
pete (235 frog)
Matt (scouty)

let me know if I have missed anything or anybody?

Cheers,
c-

Scout addict and I are using one trailer(27feet long) with one tow rig, total length is about 53 feet. We will need to get back to it at the end of all this, maybe we will follow mochamike backwards on the second trail. We can drive on the road with our rigs, but not too far. How far between trails?
Also, is it like the rubicon where you have to bring your own potty setup, and pack it out?

I can't get out Friday but will look into meeting up with you on Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning. It's all tentative. I've been invited to a event on sat and don't know when I will be able to exit.

All,

I can't go on the trip you have planned but I just got back from deer valley and wanted to give you this trail report. We went up on the 4th and entered deer valley from the highway 4 side.

The trail up to the ridge is wet but clear of snow. We had no trouble. But.... On the ridge, we came to a stop. It looked to us as though no one had been through. There was a 30' long puddle that led to a slanted patch of snow (slant was toward a tree).

We walked the trail a bit and the snow continued. There were large trees blocking the way. We didn't walk far but we saw 4 tree completely blocking the trail. Maybe 18" diameter or better.

I have no idea what the rest of the trail looked like after that. We went back down and camped at the head of the trail. Came home today.

If I can figure out how to post pics of the obstacles I saw I will.

Otherwise, bring some chainsaws and winches and have some fun opening the trail.

Shawn

Yep from pbb....

deer valley trail conditions - pirate4x4.com bulletin board

"we were up at slickrock over the fourth of July. There were some very well built rigs up there and none could make it through the alpine side of the trail. Saw a real nice rig roll over due to a snow bank giving way. The river on Sunday came rolling into most rigs interiors. The bottom of my doors sit 44 inches up and the water was at least 4 inches deeper. I would advise not attempting the trail for awhile unless you have a very capable rig and are a very seasoned driver.

There was a guy up there in a newer rubicon unlimited that was not very well put together. He tried to make it through as a solo rig without a winch or any tools to make trail repairs. I was suprised he made it out. He had to be rescued several times."

&
"deer valley is blocked by several large trees in two spots about 1 mile in from hermit valley trailhead. Still has plenty of snow in this area too, but that'll melt in a week or two. Could be more farther in but thats as far as I went

going to need some serious chainsaw work to make the trail passable."

There is a reason the cheese posted its our annual attempt. :ihih:

it was 60° last night at 11pm in tahoe. Well that's what the weather lady said anyway. So at this rate the snow will be retreating really fast. Hopefully there will still be some still around to fill up the ice chest if needed. I can bring a saw. Last year 1 week made a huge difference in the amount of snow. If we only get to the first river crossing on deer valley, great! Its a nice place.

So we are still on? Any times or exact locations yet?
I'm going to pm u my number, Craig. We met in the rubicon couple weeks ago, myself and joseph at the ellis bathroom area.

That's too bad rock tractor, but you would just be slowing us down anyways:icon_wink:

I will get with cheese and post up some details.

Scout addict's steering is fixed, we are on!! Unless he starts a new job by that time, full time employment is a good thing.

See you guys in arnold 10am Friday, can't wait!

Thanks for the call, Craig

Just checked in with hathaway pines rangers station.

No real change in trail status. Sr: water crossing questionable, plus large drifts blocking trail close to lake alpine. Dv: is open, however trees still blocking trail, along with large snow-banks.

So now I'm a maybe. The donation packing event is tomorrow.
Don't worry about the snow. It will either be melted off, or not much left.

Last weekend on the con, the snow that was there melted to half it's size in just a couple days.

That was ryan jumping in buck island lake, he's with nor-cal broncos, where I've been wheeling for the last few years. I went in a few hours later, but I didn't dive in, it was pins and needles cold. I was only in about 2-3 minutes, dunked my head under twice, before and after soap.it was painfully cold, hard to breathe, but I wanted to get clean.

On another note, Scout addict starts a new job Monday, probably will not make it on Friday. Doesn't know his schedule yet. It will probably just be me from vallejo with a smallish trailer and my Jeep.

I know its late but I (Joe) and stacy are a maby . The Scout is still down so we will be in the Jeep , witch is topless so hope its not as cold as last time. I ran into randy & rock tractor on the con last sat. The weather was great (shorts and tanktop & snow in the shade) . Not sure if I can get Friday off so any ideas about sat morning .

Looks like I'm out now, aside from the cashflow issue, my navigator buddy can't make it. His son slid/fell off a cliff over the weekend and has 20 plus stitches in various places(head, hand, leg). If Scout addict is off work, and he can help me with the fuel/food expense, we could still go, but looks doubtful.
