Single exhaust on V8

It is time to have the exhaust run on the truck. I installed a traction bar on the rear axle and now have very little room on the passenger side of the truck for exhaust pipe or a muffler. I am considering running a single 3" out the driver side. I have plenty of room on that side. The exhaust shop is going to make a y-pipe and put in a single flowmaster. The engine is a 392, that only spins to 4200. I dont think I will run into any problems, just wanted to know if anyone has had any experience. Thanks justin

Sure have done it many times. A 2 or 3 chamber 3" in/out flow master will be fine.

The y needs to be 2 1/4 minumum and merge at a nice angle like 45-60 degrees if possible. I would measure the manifold out let id and go up 1/4 inch in tube size.

The exhaust shop said they would use 2 1/4. They would also use the ball collector from the stans headers. He said he had pre made y-pipes. I will have to check those out. Thanks

I'm doing the same plumbing on my 392 4x4 shortee peekup as Robert has described. I've gathered most of the bends and will fab the stuff myself.

I tired of all the hassle of dual exhaust over the years with routing, damage, constant leakage due to the oem design of the exhaust manifolds, etc.

And it's imperative in my world that any under-vehicle service can be performed without touching the exhaust system! So routing and design for ease of maintenance is my over-riding concern.

You might want to make the crossover pipe removable for future repairs. Flowmaster makes a nice y-pipe. I had that system in a 78 440 pw plow truck - had a nice healthy sound to it.
