Simple79

Hello and good day. I have been off and on your website now for about 5 years, been asking abut this and that for my 77 SSII with good responses (alternators/carbs/wiring/major tune-ups/axles/etc.) so now the project starts this year.

Here goes: 1979 traveler (bought in early 1980 from IH dealer) 345 4bbl, 727 tf, Dana 44 front and back (3.54), ps, pb, ac, tilt, cruise. I had an accident in 1987, insurance company said it was totaled, not. I bought it back from the insurance company and it's been sitting in my garage since then.

Originally, I had bought a new 345 from the dealer along with a 727tf with Dana 20 tc. These parts have been sitting in the 79 since 1988 (covered up). What I want to do now is get this "simple79" back on the road. I could really use any and all help, so I will be checking in from time to time with questions over the next 6 months (I figure this is the time frame) on everything from stem to stern.

My goal is to put simple79 back to stock (with a few simple upgrades) and get her rolling by the end of summer. I need to know from you guys what heading and thread this should be under. I will be taking pix and uploading for you to see progress and possibly extending suggestions.

In 1980, I use to work for ihc as a "soft" mechanic for about two years, learned a lot, can do basic stuff, but would like to pick brains over upgrades and how-to's. Am 60 years old, but can still learn new tricks of the trade. Please let me know if this is doable on this website.

Regards,

I also realize that I will need to "go through" the 345, trans and
tc before start. Not a problem. I also know that there have been a slew of updates/upgrades to original factory parts and setting. I am open to anything, but would also like to stay as basic/near stock as possible, but am open to suggestions.

This basic tech section is good for tech-related topics that are either too broad in scope or simply don't fall under any of the other available topic headings. Whenever possible, it is beneficial to keep the focus fairly narrow and post questions under the most appropriate section heading. Its a fairly intuitive process, but occasionally questions come up that tend to cross topics and are potentially appropriate in more than one place, making the choice of where best to post it a little difficult. In those cases, one must flip a coin or go with their gut. If the forum administration believes a post is far enough out of place, they May elect to move it to a more appropriate location. That's a rare occurrence and is no big deal. You won't get banned, fined or swatted on the behind.
First piece of advice I have as you begin the process is to purchase a factory service manual for your Scout, available from IHPA, if you don't have one already. Next is to take your time and have fun. If your drivetrain components have been completely protected from the elements all this time, primarily moisture, grime, fuel, and oil contamination, there really shouldn't be any need for going through them. If they are in pristine, unused condition, I think you would be good to go with the installation. The engine lubrication system should be primed before the engine is turned over and that process is well documented with a stickied thread in the gas engine tech section.

I have the shop manuals (2 volume set), and yes, old as I am I will take my time. The 345 from the dealer and the 727tf have never been turned over. As I mentioned, I bought them to replace the broken ones from the accident I had. I really do plan to take my time and dot the "I's" and cross the "t's". I thought that I would be getting it up and running a lot sooner, but other things have gotten in the way (kids, family, work, etc.) all the kids are grown and the wife and I are on our own. Thanks for the input.

Life has a way of happening. You've got the manuals, so you are ahead of the game in that regard. Do you have any pics of the damage that ensued from the accident? Its difficult to comprehend an event that would render both the engine an the transmission as total boat anchors while leaving the vehicle itself still able to live on. What I'm driving at is, maybe don't be so quick to shit can the original equipment. At the very least and in the most bleak of circumstances, there must still be salvageable parts to be dealt with, right?

Quick question: I have a pair of heads from another v8, would like to know how to tell if they are from a 304 or a 345. What stampings do l look for?

In answer to your question about the damage: I totaled a highway patrol car back in 87. When I hit the back of the patrol car, the front of my truck "rode up" over the back bumper of the patrol car. The impact hit my front axle, pushing it back into the tc, breaking off the tc from the tf trans.
When I had the traveler towed to the IH dealer, they "plumbed" the frame. Everything was still straight. The front axle was bent (have had repaired), the transfer case was broken of the dog ears , and the tf case was cracked. Both the tc and the trans have been replaced.

Damn man wtf ! ? lol, was u drunk ? why did you run into the rear of a cop ? wow,did you go to jail ? lol, whats the #'s on the head,Jeff:mad2:

Ok,

right now, I am going to pull the running gear (engine, trans, axles, )from my 77 SSII and put it in my 79 traveler. The engine, trans and transfer case for my 79 trav has been sitting since 1987 and I want to go through it before I crank it over.as I mentioned before, they are from the dealer and have never been used. I want to pull the heads, check for any rust, check the bores, cam, crank, seals, etc. So that I have a "nice" setup.

The "77 running gear is a 345, 2bbl, 727 tf, Dana 20 transfer case, etc. It has about 300k plus miles, but she runs just fine. Other than the 2bbl (vs. The 4bbl tq in the 79), everything is the same.

I will be asking questions along the way, so any help would be welcome. I realize that some of the wiring May be a tad different from 77 to 79, but I will work through it. http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/images/smilies/incazzato.gif

Some of the questions I have "up front" are:

1. Since the engine is a "dealer" engine, I presume that it is bone stock relative to "specs". I just want to open it up and check for any rust issues.

2. I bought an isky cam and lifters for the "79, thinking that I would have it running soon (not!). The cam is the first one up from the stock grind. I installed it, not thinking about if I need to "degree" or "time" the engine. I now need to know if that is necessary. If not, please let me know.

3. Since the 345 is a "dealer" engine, I know that since 1987 there have been numerous technical "upgrades" to engines since then (seals, bearings, brand names, rings, valve guides, etc.) I will be asking about these items as I go along. Again, please lend some advise.

Up front:

I bought the 4bbl tq from either IH parts north or giddum up Scout back in 1987. It's been sitting since then, never used. I am guessing that it needs a "rebuild"? Let me know.

If it was purchased as a new unit or fresh reman and never exposed to fuel, moisture, grit etc...then I think it should be good as is. The level of contamination is the determining factor.

Ok, fast forward:

the running gear is pulled, disconnectd the trans and tc, and the engine does turn (good sign). Will be pulling off the heads to inspect for surface issues (rust).

I will be buying the front and rear seals for both the engine and trans, to replace (even though what is there looks pretty fresh).

Question on the cam: have attached the specs for the schneider cam that I bought a while back. Based on the specs, how far from "stock" is it? And what are the odds of this engine passing California smog with it in? Since I have the engine out, might as well get this right.

Next question, I have read some "threads" where the preferred rocker springs are Chevy bb springs to replace the stock ihc's. Is this just a personal suggestion, or a valid upgrade? Or are there any other suggested upgrades for this?

Last question: relative to the stock valve seals - is there an upgrade suggested over the stock seals from the dealer? Would also like to get this taken care of. Any suggestions would be of great help.

Thanks for all the previous advice and suggestions.

In my understanding and some personal experience the Chevy bb springs is valid and a good choice. I just put them in mine in fact. I have seen in two cases guys with scouts that run trails with me in my sammi throw larger cams "not sure of lift size" and break the spring having only the second inner spring holding the valve from whacking the piston and destroying the whole thing. Take this with a grain off salt because I am still young and dum but 100 dollar springs is cheap insurance for the newer cam that has more lift then the stoker. I think the aftermarket cams are just to much for the stock ones to handle and stress them out to much. Plus IH engines arnt the best at wine-ding up quick because off valve float along with rotating mass, iv read a ton of times the cam will make it easier to spin the motor up fast but the valves with stock springs will start floating pretty good hurting performance. My 2 cents:)

I think there was a thread where someone put Ford umbrella seals in instead off the stock orings but not sure if that's valid or not??
