silly question about shifter letters

sorry buys but this is a stupid question but I'm no car expert. my 67 1200B has a D2 and D1 on the shifter. I just curious what the main differences are. I have drive the truck a few times since buying it and always drive it in D1. should I be driving in D2?

Not a silly question at all. You have a Borg Warner automatic. When placed in D1, your trans will upshift from 1st to 2nd to direct drive from a dead stop. In D2 position, the trans will start out in 2nd and then up to direct drive. This position is meant to be used around town on flat surface streets or in slippery conditions. L position is "lock". It will hold first gear for engine braking down a grade, or it can be selected when the trans is in 2nd gear and it will hold that gear and not upshift.

Makes a lot of sense. I knew something seemed odd. I was driving around in D1 Friday night and I would press gas and drive, then like jerk back and I said something is weird with the trans. So to confirm I should be driving in D2 around town.
