SII Blower motor Q's

Howdy yawl. Does anyone know if the sii blower motor was the same for the entire production run 71-80? I have a suspicion that 1980 was a different call out than previous years. The reason I want to know is this: hooty has a stud mount two-speed motor in him right now that's working reasonably well. I have it on good authority though that a heavy duty flange mount blower motor that crosses many GM vehicles from the mid 70's thru early 90's and also by coincidence crosses to IH Scout II (depending on which parts source you refer to) puts out considerably more velocity than the oe stud mount motor. One parts source lists both a stud mount and a flange mount motor as being applicable for sii's regardless of m/y, like the choice is up to the consumer. Another online source lists only a stud mount part number for sii's from 71-79 and then the flange mount for 1980 only. Pictures that I've seen of 1980 engine bays indicate that the motor May indeed be of the flange mount variety. I'm wondering if there's be any reason why a flange mount motor couldn't be subbed in place of a stud mount motor provided the rotation and all vital measurements were the same. For the mere pittance of $18 at napa, I think this is worth a try. I suppose I could always return the thing if it obviously won't work provided I haven't made any alterations. Just wondering if anyone has been down this road afore.

Update time! I went ahead and purchased the blower motor mentioned above. While not a direct bolt in replacement, all I had to do was drill some additional holes in the housing for the sheet metal screws. I was able to line up one flange hole with one of the factory housing holes as a starting point. One issue that I am now grappling with is the fact that the oe motor had two wires going all the way inside the case, one for low speed and one for high speed. The new motor just has one male blade terminal on the outside of the case for power supply. Consequently, the fan only runs at high speed no matter which position the switch is turned to, but man does it blow! When I turned it on for the first time, I had shizz flying out the defroster ducts like crazy! Not on it's best day can an oe motor put out that much blow! Obviously this new motor is meant to receive power via a resistor switch in order to achieve more than one speed setting. What would be the simplest way to make this happen with my current setup? Did the 1980 model year Scout have a resistor switch for the heater fan? If so, maybe swapping in one of those would be the answer. I know this shouldn't be that difficult to remedy, but I'm no electrical genius, so I'm open to suggestions.

After doing some research I've learned that some '79 and all '80 model year scouts utilize a one wire blower motor identical to the one I just installed in hooty along with a four terminal resistor block mounted somewhere in or on the heater housing. So, does anyone have a source for a 79-80 sii blower motor resistor? I've checked rock auto, napa, and baxters and the ihon webstore with no joy. Perhaps a resistor from a late 70's GM vehicle would work?

Trev...be real careful with this "blower resistor" deal. That item must be mounted inside the air duct/plenum where it has "cool" air blowing across it at all times. Otherwise it is a fire hazard in the worst way!

I May have a blower resistor block here but Todd, dave, and I are buried in problems with Todd's Ford motor right now. I'll pull out all my sii hvac stuff tomorrow and see what I got.

The blower speed resistor simply reduces voltage to the motor to provide reduced rotational speed except in "high" speed where it runs off b+. Nearly all multi-speed hvac blowers from around 1978 and later (any oem) used that system instead of multiple motor windings to control blower speed. So any resistor block can be used if mounted in a forced air stream and wired appropriately. Later model stuff use a bank of relays and a blower speed controller (rudimentary computer) to provide multi-speed. I do have some tfr (thick film resistor/solid state) controllers here for samples and prolly some earlier resistor blocks as used in Nissan and isuzu apps that could work for ya also.

Very, very good to know Mike. Thanks for chiming in on this. I was curious to know exactly where and how those resistor blocks were mounted on the late run sii's. I think cuzn dave early up in hoseburg still has an '80 traveler that I could gander at as a reference, but it's probably not that necessary. As long as I get the binness end of the resistor block inside the plenum like you say, it should be fine. Talk about a case of fixin' sumthin' that ain't broke. I'm sure it won't come as a shock to you, but this is just the latest in a long line of sailor jerry's brain childs. He thought this wud be a really neat upgrade, but he never even considered the speed control differences between the two types of motors. Now it's up to me to dot the t's and cross the I's. Typical jerry shit. Just like hooty's rear view mirror with integrated map lights and his Ford style wiper delay. Yeah the stuff works great, but none of it was a simple and straight forward as jerry led me to believe it wud be. You'd think by now I'd know better, but that crazy sumbitch can still convince me to take on just about anything.

Jerry is fuckin' with yore haid all the time! Jerry's cuzzin' usta fuck with my haid too back in the old days but that heartawhack (mine, cuzzin' didn't make it outta the er) kilt jerry's cuzzin' and he don't fuck with me anymore. Now I jes' kain't 'member shit since cuzzin' ain't here to tell me where I put shit back then????

Attached is a parts list for the heater assembly (sii) that used the blower speed resistor, this is not a rig equipped with "factory-installed ac" (those a had a completely different air handling unit /blower setup).

Item #28 is the blower resistor mounted inside the plenum.

Just tore into the hvac parts stash here and I got nuthin' that will work for ya. So mabee it's time for a trip back over to jerry's other halfwit/inbred cuzzin's boneyard ta scrape up some more jerryshit???

That's alright Mike. Thanks much fer the parts list and fer rumagin thru yer shizz. I'll jes buy me wun o'them GM resistors, cut a hole in the plenum fer it and call 'er gud. If you knew what the fwb's is up to now, you'd say we wuz all freebasing and mainlining sailor jerry like it was 1989. I can't go into detalz yet cuz it's way too preliminary, but suffice it to say, johnbo, cambo and trevbo dun made an offer on a cupla deaddawg IH mobiles that is prime candidates fer resusseetashun. We're talkin' unmolested virginal type rigs here. Complete, solid and straight. Crazy as it sounds, we figgered we needed tuh git to 'em afore gramps n' cuzn mikee cud sneek down south n'git their greezy paws on 'em. Like the fwbeez need any more projects. This shit is gittin' out of control.

That duz it...from now on my normal route to norcal and the gates of hell that lie beyond norcal go only through kfalls or lakeview! Kain't be scruuin' on I-5 no more or we'll find more needless/useless shit down there that we ain't got no beans to pay for with.

We'll start meetin' yawl over way east of medturd to exchange merchandise! And if yawl manage to make bee this year, then we'll hold a Sunday mornin' intervention and gospel hour over at the truck stop acrost tha road.

Too much info ain'ta guud thang (sumtime)!
