Sealing up the Oil Pan

Jeff,

I am at my wits end with the oil pan on my 304, and I am turning to you for your expert advice.

My pan has been cleaned and painted. I made sure the mounting surface of the pan is flat clean. I have cleaned the mounting surface of the block. I currently have a rubber gasket with hightack on both sides. My pan leaks from the rear corner on the passenger side. In addition, the 2 small screws at the back of the pan leak as well. I have replaced the phillips screws with hex bolts, and sealed them with thread sealer. That helped a little bit, but they still leak.

Questions for you.

1) when you install a pan, do you use a gasket or not?

2) what type of sealant or gasket maker do you use?

3) what is the best way to seal up those 2 small screws at the back of the pan?

4) I May need to replace my "side seals" when I take my pan off. Do you sell these separately, or only with the rear seal kit? (my rear seal does not leak).

Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

I think he might be getting ready for the show sat, I think he uses the "right stuff" sealent with a gasket. You need to replace the side seals too.
 
Jeff had two pair of "loose" side seals in the stash there at ihon we discovered when sorting through the tremendous stash of nos parts that will soon be showing up in the online store.

I brought both pair back to my shop in orygone yesterday. I'm starin' at 'em on my desk now. They are not available as a separate item from any manufacturer.

Jeff is at tulare today and won't be back at the shop until Monday for business. That May be the last thang ya ever git from ihon free other than a buncha advice!

For info on how to make a tool and installations tips, check the tech talk forum on the bb and do a search for keyword "side seal", you will find several posts I've made regarding "how-to" along with pics of the tool I fab for that, simple to do by anyone. I'll warn ya though, there is a tremendous amount of "misinformation" scattered through that stuff also!

We'll soon be posting a series of "how-to" topics such as this on this forum, the basics anyone dealing with junkiron needs to know and workarounds (if possible) for the tools needed to do so. Jeff and I had this same discussion regarding installing rear main seal packages without damage justa few days ago, it's not rocket science, just careful attention to proper removal without damage to polished surfaces, cleanliness/prep, and the right installation procedure!

Can't beat that deal huh???
 
John got his side seals from us, if he's lukkee, the rear cup plugs won't start pukin' coolant as soon as he gets the tranny back in!

Guapo always happens in multiples john!

Michael, thanks again for the seals..... You're confusin the crud out of me though. From everything I read, I just need to drop the oil pan in order to replace these. I haven't seen anything about taking the tranny out....... Eesh!!!!!
 
Maybe I was anticipatin' tha tranny bein' on tha ground so's ya could do the core plugs that ain't leakin' yet??

I've been helpin' three other dudes with the rear main/side seal replacement deal since ya posted this, I just got seal on tha brain and confused you with them!

Oh well...don't ya need ta practice tranny pullin'?
