Scout wony turn over when using the key

Hey guys I finally decided I should diagnose my starting issue. 1978 Scout ok with 345 pretty much stock wiring except for the amp bypass. As far as I know.

This hasn't been a huge issue for me but I thought it is time to get it fixed. My Scout will not turn over at all using the key. So the set up I have which I have been using for years now just fine. I have a jumper toggle switch toggle off the starter to engage the starter. So basically you turn the key to the on position so all the electrical works the hot the toggle switch. It works but I want to just use my key. I have replaced the ignition switch. When you turn the key to start I get nothing when I release the the start position I get the faint noise that fades out. Any suggestions on what I should be testing to see where either I'm not getting power to a relay or or signal not being sent

Do you have an automatic, could be a bad neutral safety switch. If not there is a big switch mounted to the lower steering column that turns on the power to the starter and everything else. That switch can get out of adjustment as it's operated by a rod from the key. If you need a new switch on the column get one for a 73 Chevy vega, they are common.

When it comes to the column mounted ignition switches, Scout II's had both tilt and non-tilt steering columns. The switches are not universal. A tilt column needs a switch to match it, same as a non-tilt needs a switch to match it. Now, the fault could also lie in the bulkhead connector. You mention that an ammeter gauge bypass was done. Normally that happens in conjunction with the addition of a voltmeter gauge and/or the addition of a remote Ford starter relay. It would be helpful to know more about the why's and wherefores of your ammeter bypass. Whether it happened before or after the ignition switch first failed to function properly. And also if someone added a remote starter relay, which is a very common modification on these vehicles. If that wasn't done properly, it could certainly cause some issues.
