Scout II Auto Shift Boot Replacement

My Scout II came to me missing the shift boot. I have obtained a replacement.

Problem is, I have the plastic housing removed, and unscrewed the knob from the shift lever... And cannot figure how to remove the "pull ring" on the transmission lever - you know, the ring around the shift lever you pull on in order to move the shift lever. The new shift boot seems like it would be very difficult to stretch enough to go over that ring... It's a $40 part and I don't want to rip it by getting all "manly" on it and just using more force.

Any tips guys?

The pull ring is held on by a roll pin, drive the roll pin out and the ring comes right off.

Thanks, it was so small I totally missed it when I checked earlier. On mine it runs along the axis of the truck (front/rear) so you can't see it from either side.
