Scout got in a fight...

So here we go it seems that my 69 Scout 800a wanted to fight a bigger truck... I was sitting at a stop sign and around comes this toyota tundra pulling a work van behind it, by a tow strap, the truck clips my back quarter panel and scratches it up. Then the second car it's pulling comes by and slams right between the drivers door and the front quarter panel, no good. It seems to have bent the firewall right by the door and snapped the windshield frame that connects to the firewall, all of this seems to have shifted the radiator enough so that the fan hit it and sliced a nice round circle in the radiator and bending the fan blade in half. Anyone else have something like this happen to there Scout? And is there anything else that could have been damaged that I May not be able to see right now? I'm trying to decide if it's worth fixing or declaring that it is totaled...

I assume one side is still fairly straight. Gdab a tape and compare the damaged areas to the other side. Roll under it and check the body mounts away from the damage. Look for shifting that would point to the body as a whole being shifted on the frame. Determine where you can add in the new doner part.

I replaced the front clip on my 61. Drilled out the spot welds, straightened the wonky areas and slipped in the new part whole.

I found a nice Scout in a scrap yard and bought more then I needed. I basiclly marked where I wanted them to cut and they hacked it off with a cutting torch. After I got it home I drilled out the welds on it so it would fit right in. Dont drill through both layers of the body when seperating the parts. You need a surface to rosett weld it back in.

Worked. Perfect and not to bad to do. Your rig looks way nicer then mine before I started on it.

I know that some will but weld the new parts in but I like things right.

I will go and measure and look at the body mounts when I get home from school. But is it worth it to fix it? I don't have to pay for the damages the olther drivers insurance is covering it. But if it's bent then it's done right?

It seems to me that both you and you're Scout were minding your own business and got bowled over by a pair of knuckle dragging morons who collectively don't possess enough common sense to pass a beer fart in a whirlwind. Whatever that means. It sounds good, so I'm going with it.

I towed a vehicle via tow strap through city streets and traffic just one time. Both myself and the toad driver were very cautious. Fortunately there were no mishaps. Still, there is an awful lot that can go wrong. Its nerve wracking and I won't do it again. That's why dollies, trailers, and tow trucks were invented.

Sorry about your bad luck. As Robert said, sheet metal boo-boos are either fixable or replaceable. Same with radiators, fan blades and window glass. A bent frame is much more serious and involved, but even frames can be straightened to a certain extent. That would be my biggest concern.

Dont worry my loadstar has your back if they come back for more. Im sorry your Scout got beat up. But scouts are always worth repairing right?

Uguhh on the insurance company. Sorry I was trying to avoid bad news :frown2:
you need to find information to back up the value of your Scout that you have in your head. I've got my 65 insured for $10k and it is not an agreed value. They found a comp list of sorts and they said the value I wanted to insure it for was with in the acceptable range.

They will low ball you so fight for they Scout.s value and just have values of sold ones in your range so they have to listen.

If they want to total it (which is likely) get as much as you can and buy it back as a salvage title. Fix her up and off you go.

If the other drivers insurance is covering the damage, let them fix it and refuse to 'total' the vehicle - unless they can replace it with another in comparable and acceptable (to you) condition.

Sorry to hear that. Hope the nuckle heads insurance pays for the damages. Or atleast for a replacement, if it's a total loss like mine.

My 74 Scout got into a fight with a tree and lost. More info here With photos.

Good luck to ya. And glad to hear you didn't get hurt
