Scout engine oil

Hi, I have a few questions for somebody, bought a scout2 with the 345 in it and wondering what you would suggest for a year round oil I am in oregon and it goes from cold to really hot so something that would be fine in all conditions, second question was the current oil level in the rig seems to never fluctuate I don't drive it all that much but I know I burn some oil, were the dipsticks in those rigs always accruate or should I be worried? That's for your advice

Suggest that you read most of the posts on the oil tech section which will give you information about the oil grades available now.

I will always suggest swepco's 306 engine oil, and with the ambient temperatures you are in, probably the 15w40 would be the best choice. It is an api (American petroleum institute) rated sl/ci-4 oil and has more additives in it than the other oils do. It should be considered in any engine prior to 2007 models when they changed the rating to sm for gasoline engines. It is available through the ihon website. Be careful if you choose an oil "off the shelf" because they will more than likely be rated as sm and backwards compatible to meet sl. This was a loophole used so that you could use it for sl (or earlier) applications, but it doesn't mean that it will protect as well.

I cannot answer your question about the dipstick issues, but I'm sure that one of the other tech people will do so.

All Scout II 4x4 vehicles should run seven quarts of oil when a change is made. That will show as one extra quart on the stick. And this includes oil filter change also.

As a new ihc vehicle owner, you have hours of reading to do on these forums to educate yourself!
