Scout 800 Power Steering

I have a great old Scout 800, with which I would change very little. I must admit to being spoiled by power steering however, which was not an option on the '68.

I have heard of people using ps boxes from Scout iis, but I am wondering how much the actual gear really matters. If I get something that fits, with a pitman arm in the right place and with the right connection, what else do I need to worry about?

Okay, maybe not quite that simple, but I think all I need to be concerned about is:
  1. is the pitman arm in the proper place, and connect to the drag link?
  2. does the steering box fit without major modifications?
  3. can the frame be strengthened properly to handle the ps box?
  4. will the associated pump be easy enough to mount and drive with another belt?
  5. is it reasonable to mate the steering wheel shaft to the ps box?

I'm thinking I can take some measurements, go down to my local salvage yard, and pick out a suitable box and pump combination. Seems like my above listed concerns should be the driving force (no pun, or course), and not the make, model, or vintage of the parts. In fact, I would think that a later model chev/Ford/dodge ps box would likely be in better shape, if it would fit.

Just like to get you thoughts on this matter, especially if you've done some similar retrofit and fabrication yourself.

Thanks!
Scott

Get a newer model grand cherokee steering box. I believe 2001 and newer. They are essentially the same dimensions as the stock steering box. I picked up the intermediate shaft from the same cherokee as well.
