Scout 80 rescue

Picked up an 80 out of a field this week, the tags on the plate say it hasn't been registered since '93. No title with it, no keys. Someone hs transplanted a sbc 350 in it that actually runs, but the freeze pugs are gone in the rear of the block.

I am trying to find out more info on this rig, but since there are no keys, and no title, I can't get into the glove box to check for a LST. I was able to get a shot of the vin plate and from the looks of the vin it looks to be an earlier Scout 80.

I am guessing by the # 51991, it would be around '62-63? I am totally pulling that out of my ass based on the info that at the 100,000 Mark they started the champagne series and doll ups.

So, anyone know how to get that glovebox open w/o totally mangling it.

I will throw some pics up of it tomorrow. There is some ghetto, but all in all it is in way better shape than my '73 was when I got it.

Most of the gc latches were a pushbutton. What do you have holding it shut?

Based on production numbers, you have a 62-63 like you already wrote. Most likely a mid 62.

I thought they were all push button too since my 800a had a push button. But this glove box has a key slot and no push button. Looks like you turn the key and it releases the door. I will get some pics of the whole thing tomorrow. I do know it has what looks to be the stock d44 rear axle. I was hoping it might have the optional limited slip (track lock?).

I see no heater ductwork below the dash.

If the heater is mounted on the driver side inner fender, then the vehicle is going to be a '61 or '62. The '63 and later had the heater mounted on the passenger side inner fender and a proper duct system was installed below the dash panel inside the cab.

That piece of hood trim I think came from an early 50's pontiac or oldsmobile!

The actual lineset ticket came as part of the owner's manual paperwork. I've never seen a lineset attached to the actual vehicle regarding a Scout 80.

Definitely looks like a 61/62 with the clear turn signal lenses, protruded upper windshield frame with 5 bolts holding the top on, and the number of knobs on the dash. The early ones like mine had controls for all the duct work while the 63 and up had a single switch that controlled the heater valve and blower motor and a lever for the air flow. Mr. Mayben is correct in that the heater will be on the drivers side. The hood emblem is off of a late 50's IH pu.:icon_cool:

Yeah the heater core is on the drivers side, it even came with some complimentary bird eggs for a snack!

Still would like to break into the glove box some how! I might be able to take a punch and drive the bottom hinge out... Or might just have to take the dash out. Keys are lame!

Thanks for all the input :)

Simply use a 3/8" drill and drill right through the center of the lock body, that will allow it to be easily removed and then the door can be opened.

Do not attempt to remove the hinge pin from the hinge!

Update:

so this guy that crushes rigs stopped at the shop yesterday and started shootin the bull. Turns out he has an unmolested 69 800a that runs, and is straight as hell with almost no rust, that he was trying to sell for about 500 bucks. He was about ready to crush that 69 and stopped by the shop to talk turkey.

We struck I take the 69 that runs, and he will crush the 62 that doesn't.

I will have a build thread for "brussel sprout" aka muscles shortly.

The 69 has a 304, automatic tranny. Someone upgraded it with an msd ignition. Comes with the travel top and a back seat. Seats will need reupholstered but thats no biggy.

Very nice, even has doll up chrome bumpers and they are pretty straight. Wonder if it is a special edition?
By the large front marker lights it is an 800B which makes it a 70-71?

Say the 80 is headed for the crusher? The sbc, do you find any numbers on it. How about a block number on the rear on the bell housing flange and a photo of the head end. Could be an early 327/350hp. Worth a pretty penny or two.

I pulled one out of an 80 in Mike ismails yard. 327/300hp with fuelie heads on it. These things are becoming hard to fine in original condition.

Too bad about crushing the 80. It has some nice sheet metal on it.

Didn't realize who I was talking to at the skinnypedal booth last Saturday. Thanks for being a part of the bee.

I didn't try to get numbers off the sbc because I didn't want to chance getting jaunta virus or bird flu from all the bird poo under the hood.

I would say it is probably a 283 by the single barrel carb on it, and the old 50's style valve covers on it. I have no real idea what that is.

As for the 800, I will have to check the title / vin plate when it gets here. It is sad to see the 80 go to the crusher, but there is a lot of rotten in those panels, and with the 800 being straight and unmolested, I don't have to try and shoehorn a th350/205 under it for the missus. If they don't come out to get it tomorrow or Saturday I might crawl under there and check it out.
