Scout 80 parking brake

Can anyone tell me for sure how long the front parking brake cable is supposed to be for a Scout 80?

I'm losing my mind here or something. When I got my 65 s80, the parking brake was all messed up and kinked and the previous owner had apparently routed it by attaching it to the frame with bailing wire.

So I bought another cable from Scout connection and it seems to me that it's just way too long (though identical to what I had). I come out from the firewall and loop back to the crossmember, and there's like 1 or 2 feet more than is really needed, unless I'm really missing something about the routing. Doing some research, it seems that the 800 cables might be longer, but I'm not sure. I told Scout connection that I thought I had the wrong cable, and they eventually sent me another one that they claim is the same length as from an 80 they have, and it's the exact same length (with different ends, oddly).

So now I'm totally confused. These cables are long enough that I think I could loop them around the engine mount and still make it back to the crossmember.

So, if someone could say for certain what the length should be, that would be great. Failing that, maybe there is some routing trick that I'm missing? The manual seems to indicate that it just loops back with an attachment at the bottom of the firewall and that's it, but maybe there's something else about it.

I'm going to assume you are talking about the front cable. Sounds like Scout connection is sending you an 800 cable where you need an 80 cable. They are different lengths but I don't have anything to compare to. Worst case we might be able to have a custom cable made for you but again I need something to compare to.

I can measure an s80 cable when I get back to my shop Sunday. I'm at Jeff's place right now, and we were discussing all model IH park brake cables just last night.

Unless your jury-rigged cable is really bad and shows broken strands, I've successfully made some pretty knarlee cables come back to life, even straightening out the kinks. Just takes alotta patience and pb blaster, I use body picks (hammers) and a surface like an anvil (flat concrete floor works ok) to massage tha kinks back fairly straight, won't be perfect but can be made servicable.

Mastiff,

ya still need the s80 "front" parking brake cable deetales???

If so, I can get 'em, but I ain't gonna rip one apart for checkin' if ya don't!

Sorry I didn't reply way back when. Looks like e-mail notifications are not working for me. I think I had an 800 cable when I got this truck, and Scout connection sent me another. I ended up ordering a custom cable from inline tube. This turned out to be a mistake since they didn't feel the need to actually match the cable I sent (I asked for an exact copy except shorter). The one I got had a ball on the end that was too big and the fork on the other end was too small. In the end I did force it to work, so all is well, but I'd advise against dealing with that company unless you are really desperate. They were not friendly to me when I questioned their work.
