Rubicon 2008

I got a pm from binderbasher wanting to know when this years annual rubicon run will be. So lets pick a date and start planning. We usually go the first or second weekend of September. I have to check and see when the nationals are in ohio but otherwise my schedule is wide open for the month of September.

8 weekends to get ready. Things to do:

1. Find a 37inch spare
2. Wire up rocklights
3. Buy and install cb
4. Buy and install winch (not sure if it's going to happen)

thinking about swapping the 300 4:1 from the yellow Scout into 73. But also have a rebuilt 20 that I might put in. 5:13s, 37s, a 20, an automatic, detroit in the rear and powerlock up front, think that will be ok, or do I need to go lower?

You will be fine. I ran 5.13's with an auto and my 44's. The auto requires less gearing then a manuel. I think about 60:1 is the ideal crawl ratio with and auto.

I have a crawl ratio of 22:icon_eek: and no locker in the front. :icon_neutral: makes it more of an adventure. I need lower gears for sure. I have 4.56 in the diffs. Running the stock drive train. 727/d20 even going with a 4 to 1 transfer, would only get me down to 44 to 1 but that would be a big help in the tougher sections. When following rueben in 2006 I needed to drive in 2-3 gear just to keep up

edit... Matt I have a 37" you can have, but its a 16.5 rim size

I've done almost the same thing - 30:1 -- rolling 31" tires and no locker up front--- adventure for sure. :d

just dump it a little harder when things get tough!

Read on pirate that the marlin crawlers are having their rubicon trip the same weekend. Sounds like there is going to be a lot of rigs there, all with 160:1 ratios, should make for a slow trip if we get behind them.

All packed and ready to go. A few of us are departing my place in Loomis at 7:00 am. Looking forward to wheeling with the 4:1 gear set in the Dana 300. Together with the 5.62 first gear and 5.13 axle gears I now have a crawl ratio of 115:1.

I hate that I am sitting here at my desk and not at least shotgun in a Scout. Oh well have a great time guys!!

Made it back in about an hour ago. Only major carnage was a driveshaft ujoint and a broken steering box. I just got off the phone with Matt and jessie and they are still making their way home as they have been dealing with some cooling issues. I only took a few pictures and will get them posted when I get a moment.

I split my radiator, but with the cap loose it did not build pressure and only lost a tiny bit of coolant. My power steering box started pukin, but was able to just tighten the top nut to stop the messand add a 1/2 qt.. So no "major" damage to report either.

Jeff and Matt got stuck behind a gaggle of Jeep's. I think the leader got a new 10-1 atlas and wanted to test it out, by driving in first gear all the way out. :nono: I made the pass on the slabs when he got stuck on a ledge and met up with Mike who took old sluice and beat us to split. I kept up with Mike most of the way out as he was passing people right and left. There was a guy parked on the box by-pass with no way to get around, unless your Mike! He climb up this rock and passed the guy, I tried to follow but could not take the same line. The guy saw I was coming over and decided to get back in his Jeep and move 4 feet forward, just enough to slip by with 6" to spare. Mike talked to a guy on the other side and the guy said they had been working to get that Jeep back out for a while. (yes he had time to pass people and chit chat while I caught up.)
we waited at the lake for about 30 minutes to make sure Jeff and Matt were getting out, and then drove to do' robb's for a lunch. Me and billy hung out for about an hour and half waiting to see if Matt was going to show up, but then started the slow drive home, had to keep the speeds down to keep the engine cool

The less pictures almost always means few breakdowns. Wish I could have went but even if I had planned on going on I wouldn't have made it. I got something in my eye at work on Thursday and by Sunday I was at urgent care having a doctor look at it. The doc said the white of the eye was scratched severly and gave me some drops.

Post up any pictures please.

con 9.jpgwe had a few stops for repairs, but when you have parts the issue is not as big of a deal. I think I pulled my big fat hammer out like 10-15 times to make "repairs"

Had a great time. First major trip for the new Scout, did pretty good, but really needed lower gears. Picked-up a 300 yesterday, so 4:1 is coming. Steering box carnage sucked, but since we had a spare, it was only a minor speedbump. Here are some pics to hold you over until Jesse's cd gets to you.
