reviving a long sitting 152

I purchased a 61 80 for 250 dollars, that has all the usual stuff. It hasnt run in 10 years according to the po's widow.

I knw the fuel tanks and wiring need replacing, as do the clutch mc, brake mc, and I would imagine most everything else.

My biggest goal is to get it running for the next year, then a major frame off will happen with lots of rock crawling eqpt. To go in.

I need to revive the motor first and have a few questions.

Parts seem to be hard to come by and/or very expensive and of course im trying to do it on the cheap.

1. Am I better off spending 65 bucks for the stovebolt carb or should I try and rebuild the 1904 thats on there?

2.napa has an electric fuel pump for 112, anything better/cheaper to find?
3.figured I would replace the water pump for 40 bucks so no biggy there.
4. Should I plan to rebuild the oil pump and starter or in your experiences have they held up well to not running for many years.
5.the wiring for the distributor is un attached, does anyone have a pic of the proper wiring andplug wire routing?

Anything else I need to try and source right away or any other problem areas?

Welcome to the forum plug!

You bein' a neighbor of Jeff/IH Parts America we'll give ya "special" treatment to start ya off in the right direction.

There's many threads/topics here on the overall forum that will be helpful to ya. As for startin' a long-dormant motor, check this one:

http://www.forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/basic-tech-questions/570-pre-lubing-196-a.html

Then check this thread and download/print/perform the process I've posted there. The problem that tren and Chad are dealing with in that thread is exactly why ya need to verify top end lubrication before cranking the motor over the first time:

http://www.forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/carb-tech/739-rebuilding-2300-list-2977-carb.html

And this thread continues the above:

90% of the interior/exterior guts of all the IH I-4 and sv engines are the same and many parts interchange. Basic service practices are near identical also. A "'61" s80 is an "early" model, there are many detail changes made to 'em after the beginning of the 1963 production run. Top, seats, heater, side windows, radiator, steering, charging system all come to mind.

Many of us around here are dealing with Scout 80 and Scout 800 stuff every day, my personal rig set in a blackberrybarn for 14 years, I've been working with it off and on now 3 years. It's runnin' a 196 motor but who ever pulled the swap used the 152 flywheel so it shakes likea dawg passin' peach pits.

The electrical systems on those rigs are pitiful, not nearly as well engineered as an IH manure spreader of the same era. That must be attacked real soon.

Ya really need a service manual for those rigs, while it ain't perfect, it does great for outhouse material onna cold winter day and ya might actually lern sumthin'.

Engine/driveline parts are dirt cheep, hardly anything ya kain't get off the shelf atta decent parts house or from Jeff.

Oem fuel pumps with vacuum pumps are available anywhere by part number. The fuel tanks will be nastee, don't even think about usin' 'em without removing and cleaning, re-plumb the fuel delivery system at the same time.

Take some time and read every post in every thread on this forum, you will find all kinds of information. We only deal in fact on this forum, unlike many other similar enthusiast websites. Nearly every post on this forum will deal with stuff you will encounter!

Worrying about the weber carb is the last thing I'd think about! Make tha bitch run with what ya got! No sense in pissin' cash down a rathole if tha motor is bunged up inside! Ask one of our other members here, drew, about that! He's in tha same boat, but slowly makin' his way outta that hole in the water.

Here's a few threads to git ya started...but after this, lern how to use "search" and there is no tellin' what ya will find:

http://www.forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/carb-tech/510-Holley-19xx-series-carb-stuff.html

And:

http://www.forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/carb-tech/751-1409-Holley-issue.html

And:

http://www.forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/ignition-tech/642-ihc-vehicle-distributor-identification.html

And:

http://www.forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/ignition-tech/830-how-much-advance.html

That will get ya started, all those threads are currently "active" so monitor continuously.

Once you have a plan for bringing the rig to life, then do it inna methodical fashion, not the shotgun approach, or you will quickly lose interest when it spins outta control!

And remember, dealing with this stuff is supposed to be fun and it ain't life itself. Junkiron has set for 40+ years, it ain't goin' nowheres.
