Clean the carbon/residue really well out of all the combustion chambers and then inspect for cracks. They generally are found on these heads between the spark plug boss and a valve seat, but could be anywhere in the chamber. You can see with your eyes if present, no need to magnaflux unless you are gonna have the heads done by a machine shop.
Determine where the gasket was eroded...was it a combustion leak or a coolant leak??? Check that are very closely for distortion/flatness and make sure the head surface or block surface is not eroded.
Prepping the block deck and the head surface and making it sterile is imperative when ya go to replace the head gasket.
