Replacing Brake Booster

in the past when I replaced the brake booster I removed the master cylinder, is that a necessary step ? Could it be done with the master cylinder still hooked in to the brake lines, thus avoiding bleeding the brake system
 
I recently replaced both the master and the booster. The master does not Need to be disconnected in order to replace the booster. My job was made easier by pulling the two bolts out of the combination valve, it lets the master move further away from the booster without bending the brake lines to much. Do make sure you correctly adjust the length of the push rod coming out of the booster.

Brake booster arrived at 2 and by 2 30 I had it installed and power brakes are back in action.
That is new calipers, new lines, new pads, new shoes, new drums and new hard ware. That aught to take care of the brakes till the master cylinder bites the dust.
