Removing EM bolts/installing starter heat shield

Gentlemen:

I have a bunch of projects going on at the same time on my 70 304 Scout 800. Feel like a pin ball machine some days.

I've been avoiding this but I feel I can't much longer or it will cost me more. I recently had problems starting my truck after some test runs and it's been hot around here. Starter is new. I turn the key and the starter just lags, then ends up going. I know it can be many things but regardless I need to install the starter heat shield either way.

I've had a heat shield I bought from IHPA since I bought the truck last year but in all honestly I've been reluctant to tackle this project because my feeling is it can and will be a bear. I know I need to take one of the manifold bolts off to install this shield and these bolts have seen better days for sure.

Is it possible this bolt will just come off with a little bit of force or should I soak it in LW, WD, etc. and hope for the best? I assume I could heat it as well. Don't have a torch but I do have a MAP canister I've been using on other stuff and with a heat cycle and a quick spray of water I've gotten most bolts out. I do have a welder and can weld something on the end of the bolt after I cleaned the rust off...I just don't want to end up with a huge job and bolt extraction if I can avoid it.

My goal was to pull the engine this winter and clean and re gasket the engine engine and at that time I was going to replace all the EM bolts and install the shield.

Any help, suggestions or alternative to the metal heat shield even to buy me some time would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Never had a problem with an exhaust manifold bolt on an IH. I think they used a copper based never seize at the factory as most of them have a copper tinge to the threads. As suggested, a good 6 point wrench or socket will do it.

Yes, Kano Labs Aero Kroil, very good stuff.

Clean the bolts with a wire brush, on the bench grinder brush works well.

Install with a good copper never-seize product on the threads. Permatex make some in a small bottle.

Might as well replace the exhaust manifold gasket while you are in there, easy to do.

Copper spray on the gasket mating surfaces, several coats, then one tacky coat when you put it in.

If you really want to do it right, then run a tap thru the threads while douching the hole with a solid stream of WD-40 to get any rust or crud out of the threads. Then blow out the holes w/compressed air.

Good advice.

For now I'm just going to concentrate on the one bolt so I can install the heat shield, this winter when I pull the engine I will do exactly what you mention.

I will see while I'm at it if all the other bolts come off easy then I might reconsider but I figure why bust my hump if I don't have to for now when I can might light work of it on an engine stand.

Another vote for the Kroil. It ain't cheap, but it works well and I even like the smell of it too. Threadjack over.

Does it matter if I do this bolt extraction with a hot engine or cold? Trust me, I hope it just comes right out with no issues but I like to plan for the worst.

I prefer to work on exhaust manifolds that are at or near room temperature.

That's the issue. The Kroil can be difficult to find locally. At least that has been my own experience. Very frustrating that such an effective product would be so difficult to get your hands on. I've hand the most luck finding it at independently owned tool stores and also contractor supply outlets. Your mileage and others may. Should be able to walk into any Wally World, Crapa, Owrongleez, Vatozoo etc and pay the 20 sheckels for a can and walk out, but that hasn't been my experience here in Orygone...as yawl back east say it.

I understand but I like to support A, the little guy and B, the places that help me out...been going there for years and they have a great selection of stuff...they might even have it on the shelf just never looked for it...they do have a section of WD-40, Liquid wrench type stuff. I will check it out...if not I will buy direct or source online...I do have some stuff called "Foamey" from my local repair shop that I am friendly with, they say you can only buy it if you are in the business...who knows but thats what they tell me...

I placed an order earlier today via Wally World online for a 16.5oz "Industrial Size" aerosol can of Kroil. $24 and change gets it to my door hopefully on or before the 25th. I scoured the owl gorz interwebz for a considerable amount of time this morning and could not come up with a lower price per ounce deal than that. It should last me a long time.

An update on my EM bolt extraction...well, it was anticlimactic, the bolt came right out with no issues. I was able to get it out, clean the threads, install my starter heat shield I bought from IHPA, put back together with anti-seize and thats as simple as that...

Thanks for all the help.
