rear shock location

I've noticed a few sii's with the rear shocks moved to the outside of the frame. I like this idea for increased stability and sway control. My only concern is exhaust routing at this point, but I want to hear from the btdt crowd. What is your overall impression and is it worth the effort. Background I have fullwidth 1 ton axles, grand wagoneer oem front springs and Chevy 64 inch rear springs. SOA of course. 17x8 in wheels with 5 in backspace. Clearance looks acceptable at first take but I still need to do a flex test. So outboard or kiss? I will also probably have to run 12 in shocks on the rear instead of the 14's I really want.

I outboarded the shocks on my Scout 80 and you would be surprised how much side to side movement you have in the axle. I had to cut into the wheel wells to move the shocks in and the tires still rub against the shock bodies with my waggy axles... Not much but some. With the 63" springs you really need the 14" travel shocks if they are mounted straight up and down. With your fullwidths the tire clearance shouldn't be an issue. I like the handling of it compared to the /\ mounting before.

Thanks for the good info. After doing all the work to mount the 64's it would be sad to not get full travel out of them.

I want to avoid cutting into the wheelwells, but the underside of my tub to the bottom of the axle tube is only about 19-20 inches. Do you guys have a source for a beefy drop shock bracket for the axle end?
