rear gears

Running a 72 with a 304, 727 auto mainly stock truck...so im wondering what rearend gears some of you are running with an 727 auto that is mostly a pavement pounder and highway runner that doesnt wind out the motor but isnt a slug from a stop either. Im assuming the gears I have are a stock setup and does anyone know what they came stock with, it started life as a close ratio 4spd.

In a Scout II you could order: 2:72, 3:07, 3:31, 3:54, 3:73 and 4:10 gear ratios.

So pretty much anything could be in your Scout :d

Pop the cover and look at the ring gear - along the outside edge it will have a bunch of numbers and stuff -- one set of numbers will be the ring gear tooth count and the pinion gear tooth count. That will tell you what you have!

They wil look like this stamped on the ring: 41 11

here is the translator:
3.07: 43/14
3.31: 43/13
3.54: 46/13
3.73: 41/11
4.10: 45/11

If your Scout is 4x4,look at the front axle cover, maybe a tag on 1 of them bolts.shud be the same as the rear,if still original & 4x4.Jeff

You could also jack up the rear of the Scout and put it on jack stands and block the front tires.

Crawl under and Mark a spot on the drive shaft with a piece of chalk. Put transmission in neutral and have someone rotate the rear tire one turn and count how many times the chalk Mark rotates... 3.73 = 3 3/4 turns, etc
