Rear bumper fab

Building a new rear bumper to take the place of the old, something to fend off uninsured drivers:icon_wink: here's some pictures of what I'm doing. 1/4" plate bracketry tied in to the frame with 20" weld per bracket, 3/4" g8 bolts, 6 of them hold the bumper together, plans of 2" receiver, d rings, chain holes for trailer hookup, lights for whatever, hillift mount, jerry can holder, spare tire carrier good for a 37" (future) all tig. Middle piece 1/4" plate, rest of it 11 guage (.120") maype a chunk of 3" pipe behind it for a tank. We'll see.

Take awhile to finish, we'll see.

Re: Rear bumper fab Pictures and more progress

Made some more headway on the bumper. This is for my traveler that has a 2" bodylift by the way. Probably work on any sii though. Here's the brackets I made:

Here's the bumper today after a few hours of work:

Plan to tie the brackets in to the top and bottom frame rails with gussets tomorrow at some point. Looking pretty neat I think. Definitely different. Right now, it seems like it's actually lighter than the rear step bumper that come off of it. That's good. Will weigh it tomorrow.

Re: Rear bumper fab Pictures and more progress

Doubt anyone's paying attention, but weighed it yesterday, weighs 26 pounds, not bad. That's without ten pounds of rod in it though, been bus welding it out as it is right now. Need to finish the ends, gusset the inside, gusset the frame brackets, do something about a hitch, d rings, lights, etc. Going for a featherweight/ high strength bumper here, not a monster.

Hey that looks great cbmind! Nice and simple, and it seems like it can certainly withstand multiple honda attacks! Have any pictures of the d-ring mounts or reciever yet? Are you just going to surface weld the d-ring tabs on or are you going to tie them into the frame somehow? Keep up the good work!

Got the receiver sort of in, distance from the face of the bumper to the frame crossmember is only 3.5" though, cut a hole in the crossmember for the 2.5" x .25" wall sq tube to pass thru. Will make a plate to span from in between the bumper brackets and surround the hole for reinforcement, pretty much thicken it up. Similiar to this

be Friday before I get d rings, got it built out to the ends, need to box and gussett it in. Thanks for the compliments! D rings will be welded to the bumper, close to the bolts that attach bumper to bracket, beveled, full penetration weld, 3/8" fillet cap. Have to tear the frame apart to pull the rings off

this is looking good. When ya gonna finish it??

Uh, yeah, that's a good one. My traveler is somewhat of a daily driver, and I'm seperated from my lincoln by about 1100 miles right now, ran out of time before I had to come up to wyoming. Few things on te list when I get home in a few weeks, finish rear and front (can't seem to finish what I start, get distracted to easily) bumpers, install my inner fenders, redo a dual battery mount, seal up a 35 gallon gas tank, etc. The bumper was supposed to be smooth, no receiver showing, but it didn't turn out that way, need to finish bracing the frame mounts also, few other things. Thinking about building some kind of tire carrier/ tailgate combo. Tire carrier in general, but act as a tailgate to keep my junk in with the top off so I don't have to go through installing a tailgate when it doe come off and the bikini top or terra top goes on. Hopefully have updates in a few weeks. Thanks for the interest. Think it looks pretty cool myself. Not bad for a texan:cornut:

Nice work!

Here's my idea for a front bumper I use for destroying all kinds of "green" vehicles. With a stinger mounted in the receiver, I can penetrate any pos hybrid that gits too close, the stinger will go right in and destroy on contact if I mount the one that is sharpened!

This is the underside during the fab process.

I've never really finished the aluminum diamond-plate deck of the bumper and it now has a warn upright-mount 8274 installed.

Bumper comes in handy for pushing 48" log rounds around the place and moving dead vehicles in and out of the shop.

The 2" receiver tube can be used for many configurations.

All the iron for that bumper came from the local scrap yard/surplus metals reseller! The actual winch mount segment was a fabbed item that someone had scrapped and was exactly the correct size I'd planned to fab, how often does that happen, cost for the piece...$4!

The only thing new are the two forged "d" rings I buy locally for $10 each, and an 18" receiver tube I also buy locally, that was $28. The bull bar was left over from my truck when io bought it and then cut-to-fit. Total cost in the bumper including the hf fairlead right now...$115 which also includes 5/8" grade 8 mounting hardware I buy at the farm supply by the pound ($3.98 a pound). Prolly $16 worth of welding rod (stick), and some electricity to run the forney. Paint is wallyworld rattlecan at $1.12 locally.

Future plan is to add on a mount on each side for anchor points for a 10ft. Homebrew gin pole to use around here to use as a redneck fork lift.

Good looking front bumper mayben. That's on my list of future projects. I discovered a great local scrapyard. I've already wasted so much time there!
