rear axle endplay

I have about 0.025" end play on one axle shaft. The other side has no perceptible movement (I didn't put an indicator on it) anyway, the bearing and seal are fairly new, maybe 5k miles? The bearing and retainer are tight and right where they should be. I'm wondering if the seal is too thin? Basically not pushing the bearing in against the flange.

I'm not sure this video helps. Pretty sure most bearings move like this when not installed.

Is that a ball or roller bearing? A good ball bearing will not have that much play unless it is sliding on the shaft.

so i read somewhere that it could be shimmed to remove end-play. after a couple of attempts, it didn't seem to change anything. so today i pulled the bearing off and put on a new Timken SET10 tapered roller bearing, problem solved! the bearing i took off was a Bower 1579 roller bearing (not tapered) it was installed in 2009 before i got my press. i have no idea if the play was there from day one or has been getting worse all this time.

Those bearings are junk hence why you had a bunch of end play with it. It doesn't take them long to wear laterally and thus get sloppy side to side.
