rear axle clunk

I have a 77 Scout with 345 v8, everything was working fine until I went to drive today and I heard a loud clunking noise coming from the rear end, I have Dana 44s? I think.....this noise only happens every ten to fifteen feet that I have noticed at low speed although I haven't tried to go any faster than about ten mph because I dont want anything to break off. I know it has nothing to do with the front end because I have it in two wheel drive only and there is no noise from the front of the truck..... Any thoughts???

Also check your u-joints. Shims could also be worn, my dodge (all dodge 9 1/4 for that matter) clunk when put into drive or first.

Yea its not making a noise like its going into gear the noise comes only after I have been driving for 30 or so feet, I have a manual transmission so I know it isnt making noise as if its engaging the gear

If its not u-joints, probably a broken trac-loc. Very common. As a mater of fact there was a thread just recently either here or on bp about one.

Oh yeah! The creepy trac-lock noises. I've got one and mine sounds pretty horrible once in a while after I drive it for a bit then get off the freeway and make a turn. Sounds like a loose wheel. Good call:thumbsup:

Thanks guys I got it figured out, I got bored one day and decided to pull the cover off and found that four of the ten ring bolts were broken off and one of them was stuck in the ring causing the clunk every time it hit the pinion. I pulled out the chunk and checked the teeth on all of the gears and they were fine, went to the store got new grade 8 bolts and put them in and now the truck is driving fine for the past week..... Thanks for the help!!!!
