Re: LD`s Custom Scout II

A couple of questions about the build.

What flaming river steering column did you use? Part number or length? Was it the same size as the original? Mine's sloppy and I suck at rebuilding them.

How much other wire did you need to get everything wired with the kwik wire kit? Or another way of asking what original wiring do you need to save to wire up everything ie: does kwik wire has power feed to heater fan switch but not from switch to fan?

Does the cage have any supports going down front by the windshield frame or is the upper part there just free hanging?
Thanks for your time.

Re: LD`s Custom Scout II

I moved your post from the build thread since you had a few questions.

The owner louis purchased the steering column on his own so I am not exactly sure what the part number is and since its been so long I really don't remember what length we used.

As for other wires that were added to the kwikwire kit I would say quite a bit on this one but only because this vehicle had a custom engineered electrical system that was much more complicated but had many failsafes added to it. As for using our kwikwire kits in a stock rewire application you will still have to add a few wires such as the fan switch to motor.

The upper part of the cage is free hanging. If you plan on seriously wheeling your vehicle I would not suggest building your cage this way but for the occassional 'weekend warrior' this would be fine and even better than your standard rollbar.

Re: LD`s Custom Scout II

It was a 33" tilt column 2"diam. But this truck was all custom so it May not work for your application. Do measurements of your setup now. You'll have to change or modify the steering shaft anyway and probably some additional custom work to get it to fit. So measure and plan before buying. Also pay attention to the splines you'll need.

The electrical system is custom with relays, circuit breakers, kill switches etc.... I went a little overboard designing it but I was running high current driving lights, offroad lights, high power stereo, winch, FI etc... So why not

Re: LD`s Custom Scout II

Hey thanks for throwing up that information. Yea I have to go measure the current column in there right now. It's stock and I think the current one is 2in dia the length is the only thing I don't know. Do you remember how far that one stuck out into the firewall or did you modify how far into the cab it stuck vs stock. It is a Scout II it'd be going in? What do you think of that column?

On the wiring other then all the relays do you remember if you needed any extra wiring for the normal stock accessories or did you just use some of the old harness ie wiper motors, heater fan? I have found so many harnesses across the internet that I honestly don't know which one to go with in the end. Some have a great price others seem to include everything most of them seem to be good quality period. I just don't what to have to run out and buy a bunch of other wire if I can help it to finish what is normally installed already.
Extra accessories I can deal with which is a good thing since someone is giving me a crap load of good stereo stuff cheap. I'd rather have a rust free tub but the wife wants tunes lol.

Re: LD`s Custom Scout II

Inside it's about same as the stock . I'll have to measure how far it sticks out in the engine bay.

As far as wiring, the kit Jeff sells has all you need for the wiring job. You'll have to save the pigtails to re-use them. But depending what you equip your ride with, do some analysis to see if you should beef up the circuitry or add more circuitry etc... The rule of thumb is you should plan more than what you think you need and then you'll end up needing more than you you had first though..... Also I'll add that you should always over design the ground circuit. It will save you many headaches in the long run.

Re: LD`s Custom Scout II

Does the wiring harness provide any wire for the senders to the gauges? Or is that something you have to add to it. Also got any of the 20 something wiring harness back in stock?

Thanks again
Rich

Re: LD`s Custom Scout II

All our kits have wires going from the gauges to the senders. We are out of stock on the 20 circuit kits but have plenty of the 8 and 14 circuit kits in stock. I don't plan on ordering more of the 20 circuit kits until someone either places an order for one or I need to restock my inventory and need at least 4 kits as that is my minumum order.

Re: LD`s Custom Scout II

What size double d shaft comes in the borgerson kit? I have one already but I'm not sure where they take the measurement for it to get the width (ya know 3/4 " dd or 1 " dd ) . I need to figure it out since I need to get a longer one for the flaming river steering column change out. Thanks for everything I'm looking forward to that wiring harness :)

Rich

edit never mind found an old ujoint I had swapped out and its 3/4 dd

thanks though :)

Hey Jeff,
I just wanted to see if you could pm me my tracking number (if there is one) for my order. I just want to see if it is on its way to the house today or tomorrow so I can make plans. Thanks
