Question RE: 1973 I6 258

There is an i6 on ebay that looks like a clean rebuild. I am in California and 90% of my use for the Scout would be a commuter truck, dump runner, and freeway. Some trips up north camping would happen every few months.

My questions are... What does everyone think of the price and should I really wait for something with a v8.

Im on the lookout for a presmog automatic. With little to no work needed.... Well, immediately that is.

I've got a 79 terra now and had a 65 800 in college. Both 4 cyclinder and and im not the most patient guy when it comes to joining bay area highway traffic! Will I have the same frustration with a 258 i6?

Thanks for the help.

Yup...just not as bad. My kid has a 258 in his Scout, but we've worked on it some. His has a 2bbl, open exhaust, ax15 trans, and 4:30 gears, so it will get out of it's own way.

Moved to a more appropriate location. The classified section is for offering items for sale and arranging purchases. I'd comment on the price, but I have no idea what it is.

As trever mentioned, can't comment on the price since no link or price is listed.

But I'm a little confused when ya claim that you have a 79, that unless you live some where that bypasses smog for that year, I'm under the assumption that ya need smog checks for that 79 ya got there. But your looking for something that's pre-smog? Coulda fill in the blanks some.

Don't mean to come accross as rude. I'm just kind of stating the obvious of what comes to mind

them 258's are fairly decent motors. After I did a rebuild on the 258 in my 74 I actually got a ticket for doing 80+ on freeway and still had plenty of gogo left in da pedal. But I sorta had a slight advantage though, since I was running a clifford intake, holly 390 carb, pace setter header and a cylinder head from a 92 heap chekoree. But with a good rebuild on a stock motor will have a little bit of mild gogo compared to an old tired whooped motor.

If you are actually in the san fran gay area, I'm local and probably provide a little bit more info if needed. Maybe a little wrenching hand.

If it's this one it looks pretty clean and you wouldn't need to worry about smog unlike your '79.

It's a half cab and not a terra. Also, it's 2 wheel drive. Kind of pricey at $9,800, but I'm sure the paint and engine rebuild account for most of that along with another $1,500 for the wheels and tires. Being that you have owned a few scouts I'm sure you know what you are getting into.

If they didn't address the caster I wouldn't expect it to drive very well down the road.

Cout boy- thanks for the relocation. Noted!

Scooter. I am indeed in the bay area- west shootem up oakland. My 79 Scout terra was for sale on craigslist but im just realizing I cant sell it without smogging it and it wont pass smog until I fix the lighting situation. The turn signals arent working and I will need at least one complete assembly. You have your own shop dont you? I could bring it by if you can fix er up. I was trying to get 4500 for mine- just put 4k into it and im realizing im heading down the wrong path on a car that will always be a challenge in CA... At least for what I want.

Dkminors - thank you for pointing that out! I didnt notice it was missing the 2nd stick! Do you see something that makes you think they didnt adress the caster?

My budget tops out at 10k... And this was looking really clean and worked on.. Something id rather not do or pay for myself. Aside from the unavoidable and ongoing stuff. The 2 wheel drive is a bit of a bummer... But in reality my use is mostly street and I really want the terra style hardtop for the open bed. Seems silly to jack up a 2 wheel drive Scout.

Thanks for the imput.

I work full time during the week at the iron foundry two blocks from the coliseum. I rent out a little man cave in richmond that I do all my wrenching on my own scouts in the confines of 2,600 sqr feet. I got tired of getting wet or sun burnt while working out of a driveway. On my spare time I help fellow IH owners out when the time comes up.

With the 79 Scout, here in kalifunkia, you definately have to abide by the smog crapola. There have been ways to by pass the system with having it re-register to pre-smog. But I know nothing of going about doing so, since all 4 of my own scouts are all pre-smog. Although, one of my scouts some how.... Well I won't divulge in to that. All I'll say is that I need to keep track of what year for when I need to order parts for it.

Anyways, maybe on some Friday, Saturday, or Sunday we could get together and talk about the over all scope of your needs with the Scout. If parts are needed, I always try to order parts through IH Parts America. The column wiring is not abig deal to replace. I have done a few of them on my own, along with a few others. Sounds kinda awkward that the smog people used the lighting as an issue to possible not pass smog.

Awful purdy rig. Don't know how much the lack of 4x4 bothers you. It would be a deal breaker for me especially at that price. No way I'm payin' 10 large for a truck without 4-diggum. You'd probably be looking at about 2k worth of parts and labor into adding 4x4 function to that one. The fact that it has an auto trans makes the job even more involved.

My comment about the caster was because the changes to that Scout seem more focused on looks than function (I.e. Giving the stance of a 4x4 to a 2wd vehicle).

My sii has a 2 1/2 in. Spring lift and was a bit wobbly before I added a 2° shim (still not perfect, but livable). The Scout you're looking at looks like it has a shackle and a spring lift so if not addressed the caster could be negative.

On the other hand it's probably pretty simple to add in a 6° shim on a 2wd axle. I'm assuming the 2wd axles were set at 0° like the 4wd axles.

I just read that egay add. My question is - where's the roll bar that the seller claimed it has? I agree that it's on the high end of the pricing end for being a non 4by. And I personally would avoid it. Lifting a two wheel version is a little more common than one would think. In the add it appears to acomodate the larger tires. I have seen 4x4's slammed down to the ground. So go figure. To each thier own.

I have seen non-smogging scouts in decent drivable running condition for half that price. Unless you are in a hurry, if it was me I would waite. Not only that, I'm not a real big fan of the 2 wheel drive only option. My latest addition to my fleet of Scout II's cost me a total of $650(give or take some change). That included the dmv transfer fees of the pink slip. And it's a 4x4 with a couple new parts that the p.o wasn't aware of. Only real issue is that it needs a rebuild of the 727 auto transmission and missing a passenger seat. I figure about a rough guesstemate of 600 to 1200 for rebuilding the trans and I will be able to drive it around. Basically, for less than 5 bills I will end up with a decent reliable pre-smog Scout with a sv8-304 motor

just a few things to think about.

Btw - I have worked on several 78 & 79 scouts recently and it's mainly been general maintenance items to work on. Today, after breakfast, I'll be in my man cave working on a friends 69 800 model.

Thanks for the feedback all.

I think it a smart pass. Ive asked a few questions to the seller. Depending on the answers I think I will wait.

I know this isnt a Scout...but look at this one:

hot rod Chevy powered 59 willeys Jeep

Just needs a less ugly paint job.

Ive got my eye on a few other scouts in the 8k range. Both cleaned up and both v8's- one of has a 392 in it over on phoenix's craigslist for only 5k but the guy hasnt called me back- not a good sign.

Scooter. Ill check in with you next weekend. Maybe I can drive my terra by.
