Project back burner

Hey all I just joined this forum cause the binder planet wasn't good at all no one ever was on or replied to my thread. So I'll try here so back story I bought my first scout when I was 16 it was a beat up little thing with the 152 and that's what spawned my love of offroading my main rigs a 72 cj5. I ran across 2 scout for sale a 67 and a 68 a while back one was rolled and the other needed allot of work so I got them and have been tinkering ever since today I finished rewiring the 68 with the harness from the 67 cause the 68 had a sliced and diced harness so now 3 gauges don't work the temp fuel and oil I read about the little resistor thing and am gonna test that firfay. So far I have swapped the axles off the 67 to the 68 for the better 427s and the fact the axles we're still intact I also too the whole dash out of the 67 and put it in the 68 cause the 68s was not in as good of shape and was missing just about everything. I'll post all the pics I have of the scouts and hopefully you guys can chime in and this forum will work out allot better then the last I will also include a link to the old web page

I guess I need 15 posts till I can put up links so untill then you can just Google binder planet project back burner

Does any one know how to test the gauges with the d battery's I have read that's the only way to really test the actual gauge but no one says the proper way to set it up

sounds like your gauge voltage regulator died. im more of an 80 guy and there regulator is built into the gauge and not a separate unit...but thats my guess, it operates at 5 volts IIRC. that would be the first place id check, if you put 12 volts to those gauges they will just blow up.

Yeah that's what I have been reading but I can't seem to find the right way to test the gauge properly

The gauges, other than the amp meter, are basically volt meters. I'd hook a couple of wires to the gauge you want to test, then hook the other ends of the wires to a D Cell, C cell, AAA, or AA battery. They are all 1.5 volts, a bit more new. All this will tell you is if the gauge is working or not. If the needle goes the wrong way reverse the wires. One battery should show about 1/3 scale, two batteries in series should show about 2/3 scale.

Sweet that's exactly what I was looking for explanation wise thank you very much I'll post results after I try it tonight

Awesome new all original gauges work I hooked up a power wire wrong thank you all very much for the help

Got one more electrical question what is this I'm guessing it wasn't stock any one have an idea what it was? It was on the passenger floor and the bowl looking thing was in the passenger side send just below the switch looking thing

Also one more question this one might be real dumb but I'll ask anyways I have 2 of those cvr things I read if it goes bad it'll toast all my gauges so if that's true can I add the other one inline of the first one and still have my gauges work or would it cut it down even lower?

Also is there anything I can clean or lube to make the gauges work a little faster my temp gauge is crazy slow like the rad and all associated hoses are hot enough to not be able to hold them for more then a few seconds and it moves really slow. If I put a new sending unit would that help?
