Power Steering Pump--Growl?

On my 74 Scout with stock power steering pump and steering sector I hear a growl when all is warmed up. I am running 31x10.5's and after I drive it for 15 to 20 minutes the pump growls when turning like it is low on ps fluid, but it is not. Is this a sign that the pump is worn enough to make this noise?
A while back the pump did start leaking and I put in a o-ring seal kit, now it is not leaking.
Thanks

The pump on my 79 made a whine that corresponded to the engine speed. The pump shaft had play in it. I got a new pump from napa and installed it in the Scout reservoir. The pulley tools are available online through amazon. I will loan you the tools if needed.

The "whirring"/growling noise is common on both types of saginaw ps pumps used on IH apps. It's a sign they are "in failure" though that can last for many months in daily operation unless massive stress is placed on the system such as working heavy deep mud/snow or rocks.

The pump is a separate component from the reservoir.

If you replace the pump (or the gear, or any time the system is opened), then the entire system needs to be bled, if ya don't, not only will the system not work properly, but a tremendous amount of heat is generated fairly quickly that can lead to seal failure and the cycle is repeated!

Before I removed the pump, I searched through the steering threads and found the bleeding and filling procedures I will bolt everything together this weekend and use your procedures.

Thanks for providing all of this fine ihc info in a very searchable format.

Thanks for the reply guys;

Miquel, my shaft seems fine and the whine only seems to happen after the system is all warmed up so I don't think the shaft is bad. Thanks for the offer on a puller though, I am sure I have something to pull the pully if not hf has a set for $16.
How long has it been making the noise?
Rock, it's hard to tell, the large o-ring pump to reservor started leaking and it took a while to find the leak so I have heard the whine for a couple of months. With the pump seals fixed I hear the whine while turning after driving for a while.

I think you have confirmed my suspisions michael. I have bled the system numerous times and checked it again last night. After repeated turning back and forth the fluid looks air-free so its time for a new pump. Off to yankton hoping the have one in stock.
Thanks again for all the help!

Edit: darn they had to order one!! But $39 at hedahl's auto parts, pump only
