Pertronix Ignitor in Holley 1510 ?

Hello all:

I am looking for some confirmation and any tips on installing the pertronix ignitor in a Holley 1510.

I have read the ignition system performance upgrades and distributor id threads. It seems like the ’74 304 I have in my Scout right now has the Holley 1510 distributor.

The old motor was a ’79 345 with the prestolite distributor that I previously had a pertronix unit in. So I thought I could swap the pertronix unit to the Holley.

From what I have been reading I think it will work. ?

thanks

the truck is a ’79 terra with a 304 from a ’74, 727 trans, 4wd, smog equip removed, ac removed, most everything else stock.

Just found the working with the IH/Holley "1510" distributor thread from mm, I will check the bottom of the breaker plate assembly like in your photos thanks.

To convert the Holley distributor, simply use a pertronix 1481 kit and drive on.

To install the prestolite distributor, you will most likely need to change up the wiring a bit. It will need the in-engine bay wiring changed to allow both a primary "start" feed from the ignition switch to the coil + terminal, along with a primary "run" feed to the same terminal.

Look at post #2 in this thread to see the wiring run you will need:

Thanks michael,

well I stuck with the Holley, put in the ignitor I #1481, & promptly burned it up. (I would like to blame the children, dog, wife or even the neighbor, but I was the guy that put the red wire to the - and the black to the + side of the coil)

ok, so for my next try, I thought I’d go with the ignitor II and avoid burning up the thing if I wired it backwards or if somebody left the key in the ‘run’ position.

So I found out # for the ignitor II is 91481, (I guess they just add a 9 for the ignitor iis) I also found out you can order the ‘module only’ and it runs maybe $10 or $15 less. It uses the same magnetic pick up as the ignitor I the # is 914810. (I guess they just add a 0 for the module only)

took a few weeks to get it and another few to find the hour or so to put it in and time it.

I tell you what, it was all worth it!

I think it was a combination of the points not being dialed in correctly (I tried my best) and the pertronix unit just being an upgrade.

I don’t have anything quantitative, but I do know it idles smoother, it lost the little hesitation it had, it accelerates better and has more ‘go’ on the highway.

Thanks again, hope this summary helps somebody... Someday.IMG_5005.jpg

Thanks for wrapping this up nick!

You are correct...any electronic trigger distributor will certainly be considered an upgrade over breaker points! And most especially when going from breaker points that need service. It is definitely a project that will have a noticeable seat-of-the-pants effect on engine operation.
