Parts for the Future??

Interesting link -- and interesting process

except I do not think the "average person" will not be able to afford the process / parts made by it...

More interesting was that the machine tools to make gears / etc were shipped to china / india....

I suppose that depends on the scope of the business that would purchase the equipment. The scanner goes for about $3k, the printer starts around $15k for a small version, about the size of an old engine analyzer. I could see it in a "department" of a larger firm, or an independent operation specializing in custom or hard to get parts with automotive as a side offering. Still it's exciting that even though the "mold" was broke, there's still a way now to resurrect stuff.
I've heard of tooling going over seas, even our own timken is manufacturing practically all bearings overseas. The steel still comes from canton, oh though. The esteemed graflex 4x5 camera out of new york was shut down in around 1975, the tooling went to japan. Now they come back as toyo field cameras.
