Overdrive Options for 258 Scout II

Hey all, first time poster. I'm trying to help my dad rebuild his childhood 74 Scout II and he would like to put an overdrive transmission behind the AMC 258 currently in it, it's 2WD as well. We're both in favor of converting it from automatic to manual but will settle for an automatic overdrive if there's a cheaper alternative. The scout needs a lot of body work as it is, so we're not opposed to modifying where need be, but prefer simplicity.

Any help is appreciated.

Correct me if I'm wrong but all 67-? AMC and Jeep inline 6 cylinder engines have the same bellhousing pattern, and Jeep had a few automatic and manual overdrive transmissions. My understanding is that that even extended in to some Chrysler 318 and 360 V8s used the same bell pattern.

I believe you are correct on the pattern itself. The bellhousing is still IH specific. The 232 is different from the 258 on the pattern.

1967~1991 V-8 (290-304-343-360-390-401) all share the same block pattern.
V-8's 1972~up share the same style crank mounting flange as the 1972~ up inline 6's.
1972~up inline 6 (4.0 Jeep included) share the same block pattern as the V-8's.
A transmission from any 1972 and later AMC 6 or V-8 should bolt up to your AMC 258" inline 6 in the Scout II or other IH Light Line.
You will also need the correct flex plate and torque converter for the AMC 1972 and up pattern crank flange.

The scout 258 and the jeep 4.0 motor do have the same bell housing bolt pattern. I swapped in a 90 jeep Cherokee motor into my old 74 scout II that originally came with the AMC 258 motor, and was able to use my original torqueflight 727 in the scout.

Not sure about the Chrysler 318 and 359 though

In the context of the OP, installing a Jeep 5 speed on an AMC powered Scout2 would be easy. Might need to get a drive shaft modification and rear trans mount. Lots of big displacement parts for the jeep 6's out there.
