Open Ports on Driver Side 304 V8

Hi folks, I bought a crate 304 for my '64 Travellette C1200. There are four open ports on the driver side of the engine, none on the passenger side. In the attached photo you can see three of these ports, two on the right of the spark plug hole, and one on the left of the spark plug. On the right, I think the smaller port is where the oil pressure sender screws in. What are the larger 3 ports (one not shown in photo) for?

That is for air injection/smog pump. The proper plugs are available here. Regular bolts will whistle if used as plugs.

Does your passenger side cylinder head look the same with blocked off ports? If it does not look the same, then double check the part numbers on the cylinder heads as mismatched heads may cause the engine to run abnormal.

Hey Admiral Ismail, they are not matched. No ports at all on passenger side. Not good. Am I telling the crate engine folks to send me new engine before I re-install it?? Disaster!

I would definitely call your engine builder and find out why they installed mismatched cylinder heads.

So it is an S&J engine and they say the combustion chambers are identical, as are the intake and exhaust ports. They say they are the same heads, but some trucks went to places (like CA) that required smog, and some did not. I will go check out the part numbers this evening.

That sounds like some major BS. There is probably a CC difference in the combustion chamber. The exhaust and intake port size would not change.

Sorry for the late reply as i was out of the office. Sounds like a typical S&J excuse. I would send it back and tell them because I(Jeff) said so. Have had many dealings with that company(many not very good at all) and will never use them again. Tell them to make it right or else refund your money. Last engine they screwed us on I was ready to sue them in the state of Washington when they decided it would be better for them to refund our money instead. Again, many poor dealings, not just one or two.

Thanks Jeff, but I am so far down that road already I am ready to drop her in the truck. What are the symptoms I will have to look for when I start her up? I did not notice that head difference until I was almost done re-attaching everything and was putting the exhaust manifolds on. I'm a newbie.
