My father had 1961 scout 80. He was absolutely in love with it .myself as a kid I was more embarrassed to be seen in it. Made him drop me off two blocks before I got to school. Now I’m trying to go back in time. Almost no mechanical knowledge but willing to get into some deep learning. I bought four scout 80 parts trucks last month and found out that I’m ok at breaking stuff apart. So long as I have mostly three back ups. My first mess comes from taking the back drums off . Cut the four bolts behind the dust plate thinking they needed to be out to get things apart. Along with cutting up the dust shield a little the axle came out with the lot.my question is should I slide the axle back in the the slightly damaged dust plate and possible compromised wheel seal or should I just take a complete rear end from one of my other three parts vehicles. They all have the light 27A rear ends. Thx in advance. John

First put down the angle grinder and buy a service manual so you might have a clue about what you're doing. It's not a dust plate, it's called a backing plate and is 100% integral to your drums working properly.

Thx. Great advice. I have the manual. Just lacking some of the patience to get a full understanding because of the depth of information. And my lack of knowledge. I paid for my impatience . Had to buy a new bearing for the 27A axle. Ouch. Onto starting the motor. Turned over nicely until I hooked up the compression tester to the first cylinder. Then only clicked. Getting spark and power to the starter. Breaking all electrical connections apart and cleaning them. The cool had a jumper on the resister I plan to replace it. And try after cleaning all connections and repairing some sketchy wires. Any suggestions would be welcome.
