Oil Leak question

Okay, here is the breakdown. I have a 1975 Scout with a 345 engine in it. It has the oil pan with one drain plug and the diptick tube going into the side of the oil pan. Ever since I bought the Scout, it would leave a small dime size leak every now and then. This weekend I changed the oil for the first time, new filter and 7 qts. Of oil.....now it's leaking from where the dipstick goes in the pan. And when I say leak, I mean a saucer size puddle. Is there a gasket where the dipstick tube goes into the pan that needs replaced? I don't believe I have to much oil in the engine...at least based on the dipstick. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

You're not over full with 7 quarts. No gasket around the d-stick tube that I know of. I believe it is a press fit. No law against applying something like permatex 2b non-hardening to seal it up. I've done that. Might have to drain a couple quarts to drop the oil level long enough to allow the sealant to cure, then add the oil back.

Scoutboy,

thanks. I was thinking of trying something like that but I figured if there was a "gasket" or something, I'd try and replace it.
