Oil filter base installation torque

Hi,

I slathered the oil filter mounting base gasket and all the installation bolt threads with hylomar and torqued to spec.

Now the engine is in the truck, and the oil filter mounting base is leaking like crazy.

Per the service manual, I torqued to 25 to 30 ft-lbs. I thought the mounting base was stiff enough not to extrude the gasket. From what I can see in the truck, the gasket still seems to be mostly under the base but does seem to have squished out a bit. Is this the correct mounting bolt torque?

Is hylomar the correct thread sealant?

Thank you,

ken

A big problem you find with those adapters is that they warp so bad from over torquing that they will not seal.
You'll need to flatten them on a sheet of wet dry sand paper on a flat piece of glass. Use a straight edge to see how flat you have it.

Hi Robert,

as suggested, the filter base was not flat. I the process of sanding it, however, I noticed it is cracked, right through the flange just below the two bolt holes that go to the front of the engine, where the flange material thins. When torques, the compressible gasket must open the crack to get the leak rate I had.

I see a stock of used ones on line. Are these a better bet, or should I try to get this one welded and re-machined?

Thank you,

They are pretty cheap. I would not bother welding it..
Make sure the new/used one you buy is the same orientation. Some are rotated so the filter is back while otgers are straight down.. For your application it May not matter but make sure it won't cause an interferance problem with other brackets etc..
Then do the flatening bit on the replacment also.
