Not starting

I have a 1970 IH Travelall with a 345.
Sometimes when I try to start the engine nothing happens. I changed the ignition switch and it's still giving issues. I ran a wire to the solenoid on the starter and can get it running by touching this lead to the + on the battery.
Is there a relay in this circuit?
 
When starting a new thread for requesting parts or service technical assistance for your rig, please always include the following information if known:

Hey 727. I have the same issue. I replaced my starter solo kid and that didn't help.

But I'm pretty sure it's the starter that's starting to go. Sometimes it works fine others nothing. I keep a screw driver in mine so when it doesn't start I can hop out and short the leads on the solenoid. (I think this just jolts the starter causing it to work)

I always heard you can also test a bad starter by bopping it with a hammer. Cuz they get stuck and that dislogges it I guess. I haven't tried it myself cuz I can't get a hammer in there but yeah.


Also I was talking to one of the old timers and he was telling me he had the same issue on his and he ran a switch to short the solenoid. Said it was through the head light switch or something.
 
The starter works everytime when I touch the solenoid with a hot lead. No tapping or hammering needed. Wondering if my replacement ignition switch is bad.
 
Well I thought that as well, but my research says if it's the ignition switch then you have a chance of it shutting off the vehicle while running.


I've run new wires and swapped out the solinoid and those didn't solve it for me. I'm going to be getting my hands on a few starters soon. I'll try swapping them out to test it. If you figure it out before I do, let me know.

does it try to crank, or does it act like a dead battery? i had an issue with mine, the NSS was going out, i had to put it in N or pull up on the shifter to make it start. mine was a 72 pickup 345/727 2wd
 
If you have a volt meter, have you checked to see if the starter solenoid is getting 12 VDC when you turn the ignition switch to start? Do we have to say what color it is as well?
 
Check to see that you have 12v to the neutral safety switch and that the switch has continuity when in P or N.
 
Does this thing even have an auto trans in it? A suggestion was made weeks ago for more pertinent vehicle data, but none has been given aside from the year and model. Help us help you. Help us...help you.
