not reving

I have a 1966 196 Scout. I installed a new pertronix ignition. A new 1920 carb. The problem when I try to rev it up it dies like its not getting enough gas. It has a 45 jet in the carb and getting fuel. Ive looked through everything and it just over my head. Any suggestions?

I assume that if you slowley advance the throttle it does the same thing?

Gotta test for you. Run it for a few seconds and shut it off.

Remove the air cleaner and while looking down the throat of the card. Actuate the throttle and you should see a good shot of fuel coming from the accelerator pump jet. You May need to shine a flash light in to see.

Don't assume for a second that the remaned 1920 is ok. On average the commercial remans are crap.

The main jet for a non e 196 is 66 or 67 but that is for a 1904.

The main jet for an e 196 is list 3993-1= 45 , list 4487= 53 or list 4591 =52 all 1920's.

You seem to be in the ball park on main jet but there are many other variables. Verify fuel pressure and that you have a clean fuel filter. Might pull the bowl and check the carb for crap.

I pulled off the the fuel filter and replaced it. Then I checked the main stream after starting the Scout and letting it die. It was shooting gas done the carb. Then I noticed that the there were sparks coming from the starter. It seemed that the nut holding the battery cable on had become loose and every time I would rev it up it would wiggle just right to cut the power to the Scout(?). After tightening the nut I fired it back up adjusted the idle screw and timing and it ran good. I hoped that solved the problem. Could it have been that simple?

Yessssssssss, it could be that simple. The main power feed from your battery first goes down to the starter solenoid before going up into the cab for distribution to all the doodads and then back out through the firewall to the coil. If the coil isn't receiving a steady supply of electrical current, the engine will cut out. Good job finding the problem. Simple fixes are always the best.

If you are happy with how she's running then yes it could be as simple as a fuel filter and or some odd ball electrical issue.

scout starting problem

I have a 66 Scout with a 196. It has a rebiuld 1920 carb and a pertronix ignition. The problem lies when its idling while the engine is cold (sitting over night, a few hours) and not so healthy when the engine gets warmer. It is getting spark (screw driver trick), fuel, and air. The engine will run for a few revolutions before dying. I have tried adjusting the idle screw and the timing. Any ideas of what I should try next?

No need to start a new thread for the same issue. To reduce clutter, I merged your new thread into this thread.

Its tough to make sense out of this most recent post. From what I can gather, the engine runs poorly when cold and poorly when hot. Can we say that it runs like crap all the time? What do you mean by "the screw driver trick"? If the engine starts and runs at all, even if just momentarily, it is getting air, fuel and spark in some measure. Obviously, one or more of those elements is out of whack. During the past several weeks, it appears that you've made both timing and carb adjustments, perhaps numerous times, with nothing much to show for it. You should start over from scratch and establish some base lines. Otherwise there'll be no end to the tail chasing. I go back to a post Robert kenney made earlier in this process. He told you not to assume that the work performed on your reman carb was done correctly. He gave you some jet sizes for various list number 1920 carbs. I think the first thing you should do is identify your list number and post it here. Then you need to verify that your spark plug wire routing is correct and that your ignition timing is in the ball park. Can you beg, borrow, or purchase a timing light? Catch up on those things and we'll go from there.

So after I fixed the wires on the started I was able to drive it around my yard. The next more starting it up seemed as if it went back to its old ways of not running. I checked the jet and it is a 45. The timing is set to roughly 4 btdc. The firing order is 1342 where should I go from here?
