No Reverse Help

I'm about to buy (I'm pretty sure) a '74 that has no reverse. The guy is saying the tranny was rebuilt not to long ago and a lot of rebuilders tend to take the quick and easy route and not replace the reverse band. That they get less wear and they can do a cheaper rebuild without replacing it. So, he went to back it out of his shop, it grabbed for a second and after it was warm all reverse was gone. He dropped the pan, adjusted the reverse band (no shims) and still, nothing. He said it is still together but it has no more material on it. He says other than that the tranny feels great and works properly.
My question is how involved is it to replace just the reverse band? Do you have to pull the guts out or can you slide it up and over after pulling the valve body and make it a 'relatively' simple fix?
I'm reading through the guapo post but it's getting late. I am trying to figure out 1. If I can do it and 2. How much I should talk him down on his sale price so I can fix this.

Thanks

There are several issues with a 727 that can cause this condition.

And determining "why" is a diagnostic process covered in any service reference for the t-407/tf 727 unit. There is nothing any different regarding the t-407 version as compared to any other application other than the bellhousing design, and the adapter for the married transfer case.

The low/reverse band is the last component to come out of the case during teardown,...and the first component loaded into the case during re-assembly.

Replacement of the low/reverse band is a judgement call on the part of the transmission builder, there is no reason to replace it if it's within tolerance and shows no signs of cracking adjacent to the bosses or evidence of over-heat. The t-407 units ihon sells always have all friction materials replaced with new, upgraded components.

The IH service manuals for all variations of products which used this transmission are very complete as far as diagnostic and service information.

We offer t-407/tf 727 transmissions reconditioned in a very "hd" mode beginning at $995 with exchange.

Got her home last night after a 200 mile drive. I am now a new Scout owner. :)
she road really smooth and I could do 65mph ok with no vibrations. Speedo dead on.
Low, 2 and 3 work fine. There just is no r. Shifting into r is like being in n. So, since there is one l/r band, would it be safe to say the band is actually good and the no reverse issue is something else? A reverse servo or something that is stuck or not working?

Possibly.

You simply must have a service manual if you are going to work with this stuff. That is the primary tool needed. And...the IH service manual is excellent in respect to working with the t-407 transmission.

We certainly do not mind helping folks with stuff like this...especially regarding issues which are somewhat lacking when the service manual is vague, sections are missing, etc. That is the reason this forum exists! But our common ground for reference is always going to be the appropriate parts list and service manual for the vehicle under consideration.

Oh no. I'm not going to tear into a transmission. I don't think I've got the skills or tools to be doing that. I am just trying to get a basic idea of what the issue could be so I can sound a bit like I know what's going on when I take it to be worked on.
