Nissan Diesel questions

Before I purchase a diesel Scout I've found, I have a couple of questions.

Are the non turbo diesel's decent? How well do they hold up? Can they be used for light to moderate offroading with the proper gearing? Are they worth purchasing, or am I better off keeping and eye open for a decent Scout II with a gas motor?

Any thoughts or advice are welcome. I've had lots of Chevy trucks/blazers/and suburbans, and several diesels, but am curious about this before I jump in.

I should mention that I don't mind if it takes awhile to get moving, as long as I can get moving. The Scout in question has d44's, a 4-speed, and 33" tires.

Thanks!

Gearing makes a huge difference, but yeah they have a hard time getting out of there own way. However it is a very simple motor to work on and is actually an industrial motor so they usually hold up for a long time. You can always add a turbo down the road and a few other little things but it will never be a powerhouse. However some advantages are, they are already fuel injected, usually never over heat; get good fuel mileage, if they are well tuned lug down to very low rpms for a nice slow crawl, lots of other little things. Honestly when I build a trail rig I am going to seriously look at the diesels. The only other major draw back I see right now are the fuel costs as well. I don't see that improving anytime soon. Alot depends on what they are asking for it also and what kind of shape it's in.

Thanks for the info. I spoke to the present owner and he claims 26 mpg, comparing that to the 10-12 mpg I hear from most v-8 owners, even with the higher cost of diesel, it's worth it especially when fuel injection is involved.
