New guy needs 392 in TX

Hi,

my name is john vaught I have three Scout's and I'm located in the fort worth texas area.

My 1973 Scout was robbed of it's radiator and carb unfortunately the thieves that stole my carb left the hood open and it rained in my intake manifold and locked my motor up.

I would like to find a complete 392 or at least a 392 block that I can use my 345 heads on.

Please pm me if anyone has any leads. I can't stand to see my Scout just sit there wounded.

Thanks

Thats some crazy shit if they stole your radiator and carb! I am heading to that area in a couple of months. Is Scout piracy a big problem around there? You got me worried now!

Well I went to korea and then afghanistan and the Scout just sat there out in odessa. I think the thieves got my uncles tools and some other stuff too. It was a shame the 345 ran like it was brand new and it was just sitting there waiting for me to come home and get it.

I bought the Scout during my first marriage to drive back and forth to work I found it behind a house where it had sat for almost ten years with a bad water pump at that time it had about 40,000 miles on it, I put it a 392 square bore manifold on it and a four barrel Holley carberator and it just snow balled from there.

After my divorce I changed the tub it was rusted into from all the years up of stilling up in cloudcroft, nm and rebuilt the transmission did a shackle reversal and spring over lift and installed some 8lug full floater axles and some 39" tires.

That Scout has never left me anywhere it always was able to get home even if it broke something, I'm going to have to rebuild the engine and I would like to find a 392 block to have machined instead of using my 345 block. With all the mods I can use the extra displacement.

I think you will be alright as long as someone is around and you lock your Scout up.

Thanks,

john vaught

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Too bad you didnt post a couple of weeks ago, I just dumped a 392 long block and 345 long block plus a complete 345 into the scrap bin. I am moving from alaska down to texas in two months and could not drag all that with me. I would have dragged one down for you but I checked the scrap bin I used and the parts are now probably melted down. Good luck finding one, check around for old travel all's they sometimes have the 392 in them, thats where I got the one in my Scout right now.

Great scott. Melted down!!!!!

I think I have one found I just have to get the logistics figured out. I know all about having to move and that some things must be left behind but I am surprised that no one wanted those motors. They would have at a minimum made good fire pump motors for someone.

I have been temped to adapt one into my old Ford tractor like they use to do with flat head v8's.

An old buddy of mine is living up in alaska now I could never pronounce his name so I just called him gus.

What part of texas are you moving to?

I had them on craigslist for a while, got rid of a set of ic 392 heads, that was it, nobody else wanted anything. Looks like I will be heading to granbury, just south of fort worth in July. Now if I can only find a job.......

Granbury is only 45 miles from here and has a nice lake/river.

The are a number of people that are under the impression the ihc motors are boat anchors and don't give them the credit that they are due. If ihc had the same intake and head options that a 350 Chevy does it would achieve similar results. If you look at the horsepower and torque on a 1972 345 and a 1972 350 truck motor they are quite similar, however I believe the 345 was more durable.

If you are thinking about an attempt at marrying 345 heads with a 392 block, you need to be looking only for a non-ic 392. That would be an engine with a block serial number equal to or less than 1013196.

A 392 block with a serial number of 1013197 and greater will be an "improved cooling" unit and the cylinder heads will not interchange.

Lots of information regarding this in the engine tech sub-forum.

Yes sir,

I am aware of the differences between the improved cooling version vs. The origional.

Luckily I think I have found a complete 392. Keep your fingers crossed my Dad is going to check it out tomorrow.

I would still like to get a hold of a bare 392 block so that when I rebuild the locked up motor I have now I can go to the 4.125 bore.

I still need a 392.

I thought I had one but I tore it down and the block is cracked in the lifter valley.

So I need a non ic block now or a complete ic 392.
