New A/C system sugestions

So I have been searching all over for information but not finding much. I am looking for sugestions on manufacturer/brand of a new a/c and heater combination system that is all included or a list of new parts to buy to put a great one together. This will eventually be installed in a mid 60's c series travelette.

I found references to the vintage air brand but figured there has to be more options out there. When I get ready to do it im not worried about dropping $1,500 on it but it has to be worth it.

Mr mayben, if your reading this I was excited to find your thread talking about the ultimate a/c system build but it seemed the thread died. Any sugestions anyone might have would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Our member who was working with the "ultimate" hvac system ended up using a so-called kit (kind of a joke) from ama. In fact, I looked the system install over in texas a few weeks back, seems it has a refrigerant leak that the installer is going to have to repair. But at least after many years it appeared that ama had corrected the compressor mount misalignment issue that has plagued many of those installs.

There are several under-dash evaporator assemblies still on the market, do a search for sources. Some folks like that look, others hate it.

The condenser, receiver/drier, compressor, compressor adapter mount, etc. Are available from many sources as well, but the compressor adapter mount that has been developed and manufactured here at ihon is superior to all others.

Condenser physical size can be quickly gathered simply by measuring the footprint on the air-on side of the radiator and determining mounting hardware location. The bigger the better and only a parallel-flow condenser should be used.

Hopefully I'll be actually updating a compressor conversion on a squarebody Travelall in the next few months. I would have started that this week but priority right now is to do a rebuild on the transmission that lost reverse gear 4,000 miles ago.

Is there a "kit" that you feel is a quality product and worth the price? Obviously vintage air comes to mind but thats the only one I can think of off the top of my head.

The vintage air stuff is truly purpose-built for it's intended installation. And out of all the components out there, it's the high end product.

The ama is simply off-the-shelf individual components that must be assembled using some fitzall parts included and is somewhat crude unless installed with some additional parts that will enhance the install and allow setting components in locations that are out of the way. It does use a zexel/seltec/tama compressor (150cc displacement) though.

With some careful pre-installation measurement and proper selection of various vintage components, a very unique system can be set up which includes an hvac module that will eliminate the entire oem heater system also.

For my use, if the entire hvac system is desired, the vintage stuff is what I'd use.

I installed the vintage air system compaq unit in my Scout. Did the whole thing so I wasn't mismatching parts. Works extremely well. Saves a significant amount of space. Almost no parasitic load. Bigger exchanger so engine cooloing affected less than the stock unit. Removed all of the stock heating componants so a lot more underhood space. Lost my glove box because of all the ducting but gained an all in one hvac system with "mixing" capability for defrost. And the bracket that Jeff sells is a must. Vintage has nothing and with a little grinding (maybe) you will have an adjustable braket that will not twist with tourque that mounts on the stock bracket making it look like it goes there. The vent and control options are great and very variable. I went with the compaq unit because it fit where the old saddle bag unit went. One thing I will say is that it is such a small unit that if you have an original style carpet kit or original you will have a bald spot. My biggest project with this upgrade is insulating the truck to keep the hot spots from affecting the cooling output. Understand that I am in houston tx and battling the worst drought we have had in recorded history and I am not dying in this truck. I can keep the truck cool in the middle of the day in 100+ degree weather with 100% humidity which is hard to defeat. The defrost itself is worth all the effort. Just my two cents.
